The Too Much TV Roundup- 08/06/23

For those of you who pay attention to relese dates, this is your heads up. Tomorrow, Season 3 of only Murders in The Building starts.

11) Dark Winds (AMC Plus)

English Audio Description?: Red on, young man

Status: Not Yet Renewed

I had to start Dark Winds at the beginning. Of course, I looked for an alternative audio track, and instead of audio description, I got this “dialogue boost” offered. It’s certainly not the same thing, but I figured I’d at least try it out. It didn’t really seem to do much. Then, we got serious about the lack of audio description. While watching the show, I tweeted AMC Plus, where I let them know I was starting Dark Winds, but if they could hold on that would be great, because I now have to go learn navajo. People at these streaming services just think we’re being whiny, but there is a good chunk of this series, which has a predominant Indigenous cast, that is spoken in a native tongue that I apparently must now dedicate my life to learning in order to watch Dark Winds. Wouldn’t it just be so much easier to realize that i can’t read subtitles, and that blind and visually impaired people can’t, which is a large part of why we keep asking for audio description? Whether or not we deserve accessibility is a decision that is made by people who do not know what it is like to need accessibility, do not require it themselves, make no effort to understand it, and therefore decide it must not be important. And to those people, I say, fuck you too.

Episode Grade: unwatchable

10) Designing Women (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

Men, am I right ladies? At least, I think that’s what this was saying. It’s hard to fully understand when it lacks audio description.

Episode Grade: C+

9) Chip and Dale’s rescue Rangers ((Disney Plus)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

As i started this blast from my past, I’m of course reminded that I will never really know what Zipper is doing. I’m sure blind kids would appreciate knowing about the non-verbal fifth member of the Rescue Rangers. What an odd pilot. There’s no real introduction to the series, they are just suddenly on a pirate ship, trying to rescue Dale. Who are Gadget and Monterey Jack? Good luck finding out.I guess as a child, i never really thought about TV pilots.

Episode Grade: C+

8) Doug (Paramount Plus)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

One of those episodes where I liked the second half but not the first. Doug running around looking for his journal is probably something someone has experienced before, but always assume Roger has something to do with it and start there. The second half resonated a lot more with me, because what kid didn’t have a spy alter ego? For me, I was one of the weird few people who have ever seen the animated kids show James Bond jr, and that was my jam. I’d love it if Doug had audio description.

7) Seaquest DSV (Peacock)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

Did you guys know Seaquest was on Peacock? Brighter did I. Man, in a year of nostalgia for me, I needed this show. The pilot is actually quite good, and held up at least in terms of writing. It manages to introduce you to every important character, as Roy Scheider tours the vessel and even ends on a cliffhanger. It’s a pipe dream for this to have audio description, but as future episodes include more action, it will become more necessary. What a blast from my past. I loved this as a kid. There are so many shows that should be on streaming, and aren’t, I was surprised to find out this was on Peacock.

Episode Grade: B

6) Survival Of The Thickest (Netflix)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Not Yet Renewed

Reminded me a bit of First Wives Club, or if Bust Ya Windows became a series. I’m excited to see where it goes from here. The pilot feels like a catalyst for the rest of the series. you feel a title like a “what’s next?” Or “now what?” At the end.

Episode Grade: B+

5) Home Improvement (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

Still a show that ran long enough it should have audio description, but I loved the softer side of Tim Taylor when he has to babysit a little girl for a while, and then really wants a daughter. Luckily, Tim Allen gets to live out this fantasy later in life in another TV show.

Episode Grade: B+

4) Community (Netflix)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: The movie Is Coming

Annie like Troy. Pierce maybe does a nice thing for Britta. And Jeff moves in with Abed.

Episode Grade: B+

3) My Adventures With Superman (MAX)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Not Yet Renewed

For a show coming off Adult Swim, it isn’t a raunchy version or anything. It’s TV PG. It’s just a little bit more adult, and goofy in nature. Conceptually, I enjoyed it, but I gotta be honest and say I’m not a huge Superman fan. My favorite Superman project so far has actually been Smallville.

2) Good Omens (Amazon)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Not Yet Renewed

I started back with Season 1, because I’ve never seen the show. It certainly has its own brand of humor to it, and the leads are interesting. This could really go either way, but the pilot interested me enough to want to go on this journey. It’s a really solid pilot that sets up the tone of the show, the premise, and the main cast all at once. You’d be surprised at how hard that seems to be nowadays.

Episode Grade: A-

1) Full Circle (MAX)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Limited Series

I have to admit that near the beginning of the show, I wasn’t really sure what i was getting into. As the show played out, I was even confused, like looking at a puzzle, where somehow people know where the pieces will go based on the little picture, yet none of them are connected yet, and they’ve still got 800 pieces to go. As the episode progresses, you impressively start seeing little bits come together, and by the end of the first episode, I was left with an interesting enough premise that I was very much excited for the next episode. however, you might struggle through the first half, but my recommendation is to please watch the full pilot before making a determination.
