The Too Much TV Roundup- 10/12/23

Two big new shows dropped yesterday. Also, Hulu, which just brought back moonlighting, announced the return of LA Law in November (not the remake). And there was news of Halloween being purchased for TV rights and a cinematic universe. So look for a Michael Myers TV show as well as I guess an Avengers style Myers universe?

10) The Ren and Stimpy Show (Paramount Plus)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

While I am still enjoying a little taste of nostalgia, this series very much relies on sight gags and really needs audio description. It also has some perfect gags, like log, which had Log for Girls during this episode. I still sing along to the Log song. It’s still funny.

Episode Grade: Unwatchable

First Wives Club (BET Plus)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Unknown

Hi BET Plus. Welcome to the roundup. I dumped my britBox subscription, since they don’t seem at all bothered by their lack of audio description, and decided to check out BET Plus, which has been around a hot minute, and really has no excuse either. Do you want to play in the streaming game? Then BET Plus originals like First Wives Club should have audio description. I’m actually starting on Season 3, because i did watch the first two when they ran on regular cable, but I must have missed the 3rd season run if it ever happened. It’s a fun show with a solid cast, and it could definitely be made better by having audio description. Looks like I’m going to have to reach out to customer service on this one.

8) The Masked Singer (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: no

Status: Renewed?

The clues and costumes need audio description, but the fact that I’ve been able to guess people in the past correctly either based on the limited clues I have access to make it hard for me to hammer this as unwatchable. I was surprised by the elimination. I was thinking Joe Rogan, and I was wrong. However, I’m 100% positive the Gazelle is Hilary Duff. The disney clue, her film debut in the 2000’s, and the dog tags gave it away. Hilary starred in Cadet Kelly.

7) Praise Petey (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: no

Status: Unknown

This continues to blaze its own original path, with Petey trying to change this cult that her dad bequeathed her. I wish it had audio description, but a lot of the jokes are easy, and land. It’s a great concept for an animated series, and I hope they stick with it. Little jokes, like the plot of Erin Brockovich being important in this episode, are so random that I love them.

6) 8 Simple Rules (Disney Plus)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

Bridget starts dating the guy across the street, who is in the Navy, and his responsible behavior starts to rub off on her. This is episode 27 of Season 1. Good lord this first season is long.

Episode Grade: B+

5) Tiny Toons Looniversity (MAX)

They are Tiny and Tooney, but a lot of the characters from Adventures seem to only pop up in references. There’s a casual reference to Fifi again here, as well as lil Beeper, though neither make an impact. Instead, buster learns magic, and Babs and plucky both launch school newspapers, except Plucky is using Hampton’s talking while sleeping to leak secrets.

Episode Grade: B+

4) The Wheel Of Time (Amazon)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Renewed

Everyone seems like they are moving into perfect position for the season finale. Rand has the upper hand, as he can keep his friends alive because he refuses to cooperate should any harm come to them. I wonder if he knows about Egweyn.

Episode Grade: B+

3) The House Of Usher (Netflix)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Limited

Mike Flanagan’s latest show does start off with a slow introduction to the world of the Usher family. We learn at the very beginning that tragedy has struck, and the series seems to be a flashback to how we got to this point. There are many references to other Edgar Allan Poe works, so the bigger the Poe fan, the more you’ll enjoy it. It also takes a nod to the painkiller crisis, by updating the core story and making the Usher family in charge of a criminally negligent pharmaceutical company. There aren’t many scares in the first episode, though the tone is set within the first minute. I think later episodes will build on what is set up here, so I went with this grade because I’m optimistic about where Flanagan is taking this story.

Episode Grade: B+

2) Found (Peacock)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Not Yet Renewed

I’m a bit concerned about the long term viability of Sir as a character in his current state, and i don’t know how the show is going to handle this long term. Like, if we are here in Season 4, is he in a place where he has been redeemed through his helpful acts? The main case of the week was interesting, and we are starting to expand the personalities of the supporting cast. Zeke has a tough time just getting a package inside.

Episode Grade: A-

1) Frasier: The Revival (Paramount Plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Unknown

Frasier is back, and he’s been given an all new supporting cast, which includes a grown up firefighter version of his son, and also his nephew, the son of Niles and Daphne, who is like a dopey version of Niles. We shall see how this series progresses. I’m optimistic, as I did laugh a couple of times. I do miss the original cast, though I’m sure when the spinoff first launched, people missed the Cheers characters as well.
