The Too Much TV Roundup- 11/16/23

I’m not feeling the Pedro Pascal casting as Reed Richards, only because I was really hoping for John Krasinski.I know Pascal is hot right now, with The Last Of Us and The Mandalorian, so it makes sense. but Emily Blunt could have played Invisible Girl, and we know Krasinski can write/direct. Just saying.

1) Shelter (Amazon)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Not Yet Renewed

Well, that was a doozie of a finale. I think this show was always all over the place, until it actually started trying to tie everything together. I’ve yet to see a Harlan show make a second season, but Shelter certainly seems like it is established to do so. Will Amazon stick with it?

Episode Grade: B+

2) Everything Now (Netflix)

English Audio Description?: Yes

I was wondering how they were planning on formatting this as it moves forward, and it looks very much like a lead character, with some friends. It could very well go the way of Sex Education, where there is a clear lead, but as the show continues we learn a lot about the side/ supporting characters. It also seems to want to casually mention the eating disorder as being a thing we all need to be aware of, like a dark cloud over the series and its lead, without making this profoundly about an eating disorder. It’s very slowly growing on me.

Episode Grade: B

3) The Supermodels (Apple Plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Limited

A fantastic docuseries that really tried to give a somewhat serious look at these women. certainly they control the narrative, but they also seem to reveal parts of themselves that feel like they’ve been hiding. I always prefer a project like this to not have such an obvious problem that the target is still alive, and any truly dark or disturbing things are left on the cutting room floor as a result, but I think the series for the most part really did accomplish what it set out to do.

Episode Grade: A

4) The Hardy Boys (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Final Season

Even as I could see them starting to figure out there would be a twist, I didn’t think it was going this way. A true genius and criminal mastermind at work here. Quite a surprising turn of events. I haven’t liked an episode of The Hardy Boys this much in years.

Episode Grade: A-

5) Quantum Leap (Peacock)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Not Yet Renewed

Ben finds himself having leapt into the space where someone from a previous leap is around. This is something that happened in the original series, and it looks as though after that kiss at the end, Ben is going down the same road. Meanwhile, the new guy gets to be a hologram, and Ian tries to stop the nefarious tech company from stealing data.

Episode Grade: A-

6) Friends (MAX)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Ended

Phoebe is dating two guys at the same time, which leads to hilarious results. Meanwhile, Chandler is still playing Dr Doolittle with the duck and chick living in the apartment. RIP Matthew Perry.

Episode Grade: A-

7) Portlandia (AMC Plus)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: ended

three episodes in, and not all of the sketches work without audio description. I’m conflicted, but they have these transitions that I can’t even follow because they don’t have any dialogue. Just some random music. That being said, there was a great Aimee Mann segment here, which I never thought I’d ever say, but I think at the end of it, I need to be able to enjoy all the sketches, not just one.

Episode Grade: Unwatchable

8) The Daily Show (Paramount Plus)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Renewed

Comedy Central is supposedly mulling over a host. Will it be Leslie Jones who turned in another week of hosting? With news that Lewis Black will no longer be doing live touring, I’m honestly more concerned with how we can continue to get his brand of humor out there for everyone. Lewis is my top choice, but technically has been my top choice to host the Daily Show since the first theoretical conversation about “what if Jon quits?” Back in the day. There are other names I’d love to see as well, but Jones was hilarious, and I wouldn’t be mad if it was her.

Episode Grade: A-

9) The Masked Singer (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Renewed

I know you will never believe me, and your validation matters not, but I correctly guessed who this was from their clue package, and they hadn’t even sung yet. I feel truly accomplished.

Episode Grade: B (I can’t go unwatchable this week, since I guessed the eliminated contestant with not a single visual clue, or help from the judges, but this show needs audio description.)
