The Small Screen Diaries- 02/16/24

I’m now only one episode away from learning which of the three contestants I don’t care about wins Squid Game: The Challenge (Netflix). Of course, I could just look it up, since this was decided a while ago, but I don’t binge shows. I like my cliffhangers. I’m glad Ashley didn’t make the final 3, since she couldn’t see the irony in someone not following with a selfless group act. But, I’m also not sure I want Maya to win. I’m not sure I want any of these three to win, because this show has been more interested in getting us invested in the people who get eliminated. If it did a better job, this would be different. I feel like I know the most about Maya, but only recently, and I’m not necessarily a fan. So, I don’t care who wins.

I also now have one episode left of Fargo (Hulu), as the FBI is about to raid the ranch. Dot still has to figure a way out of this madness. An interesting episode that really makes me wonder the “true story” part, since I think we would have heard about this. I feel like this would have made the news so hard at this point, that changing the names would be pointless. I didn’t understand how Dot’s hiding spots worked in episode 9, (sorry, no spoilers), probably my first head scratcher with this audio description.

Has Been Hotel (Amazon) had a visit from Dad, or you know, Satan. So, there’s that. Quantum Leap (Peacock) really shook things up with the presumed departure of a series regular, and a lot of questions going into what I believe are the final two episodes of the season. I do believe the guest star was Kate Walsh. I could be wrong, but I’m pretty sure I heard her. This show didn’t fool me with that twist, because once I saw who could be on the chopping block, I knew who would be on it.

So Help Me Todd (Paramount Plus) is back, and exactly the same feel as it was when we left. If you were a fan before, they changed nothing. The husband coming home is just a blip in the plot, as Marcia Gay Harden is clearly not having it. She’s the reason to watch pretty much anything. The audio description is good, but I wish it would stop acting like I got here by accident. It should say “you’re listening to audio description. Welcome.” Instead of spending precious description time trying ton tell people how to turn off AD.

Finally, I really enjoyed the third episode of Abbot Elementary (Hulu), but it still has audio description that signals to me that someone sold their soul to hell. Abbott Elementary is in the bottom 3 of shows I currently watch that have the worse audio description. Now that I’ve wrapped Percy Jackson, that list is: Abbott Elementary, Ted, and The Traitors, with My Life With The Walter Boys on notice. While I’m on the topic, the shows with the best audio description right now are Masters Of The Air, Criminal Record, and Halo, with Fargo having just been knocked out by the return of Halo.

In addition, I pushed further into my Game Of Thrones rewatch, to the Wildlings epic battle episode, and Egret’s death. Heartbreaking, to be sure.

Say Something!
