Welcome back to the roundup. Not a big list of shows for the day, but a pretty solid one.
1) Shining Girls (Apple Plus)
English Audio Description: Yes
I vote this series most likely to make you go “WTF” and make your skin crawl in the same episode. A fascinating piece of work from Apple, really unlike anything else on right now. It would be easy to write this off as a standard crime solving TV series, but Kirby breaking with reality every episode really does put a twist on things. And, the narration does a great job of following this process, like here in the third episode when reality shifts… and her hair got longer? I’m engrossed in this series.
Episode Grade: A
2) The Marvelous Ms maisel (Amazon)
English Audio Description Available?: Yes
I’m so far behind. I know. And for this show to rank second on my list, shows the power of Shining Girls, because I love Maisel. in this episode, a lot happens to pretty much every character. Joel finally convinces Mae to meet his parents, until she works herself into such a frenzy that he calls it off and tells his mom he’s dating someone named Rachel. Abe is still mad at his wife for the last episode, but she’s been invited to help one of the richest men around find husbands for her two daughters, which causes her to snoop in Midge’s room and find out where Midge has been working these past few episodes. Meanwhile, Midge gets an invitation to Shy Baldwin’s wedding, and decides to go, finally having her peace with Shy. And the always excellent Jane Lynch is back as she sits down for a TV interview, which she got from Suzy, who spends most of the episode looking for a secretary.
Episode Grade: A
3) The Staircase (HBO MAX)
English Audio Description Available?: Yes
The body of Martha and Margaret’s mother is exhumed, and the trial plays out. Ultimately, we are led to a verdict, but not before we learn a bit more about Clay, and also this mysterious new woman Sofie. The only episode’s downfall? We got another flashback to a theory of what went down that night. Since no one but Michael actually knows, that scene was unnecessary.
Episode Grade: A-
4) The Pentavorate (Netflix)
English Audio Description Available: Yes
Not my favorite thing in the world, but when Mike Myers lands a joke, he really lands it. in the second episode, the scene where they are playing pool and cursing a lot, then the Netflix executive jumps in and removes all the profanity only to reveal how incredibly sexual that scene was reminded me of when mike myers was at his peak. He’s still got it… sometimes. Also, I’m loving the inspired casting of Debi Mazar in such a large role. She never gets this much attention.
Episode Grade: A-
5) Made For Love (HBO MAX)
English Audio Description: Yes
In episode 4, there are now 2 versions, one that’s walking around and asks her husband to show her where he’s from, only for us to learn A LOT about his past, meanwhile the other version is trapped in a computer and trying to get Ray Romano to find her a body. This show is weird, but this was an improved episode.
