The Too Much TV Roundup- September 23rd

Sometimes I wonder if I give out too many perfect A grades to series, and I want it to be earned when the episode warrants it. So, we have only one clear winner today.

1) Harley Quinn (HBo MAX)

English Audio Description?: Yes

In the penultimate episode of the season (this show has been renewed already), Harley, ivy, and the gang have to team up with Batgirl and nightwing to save Gotham as Bruce accidentally triggered a zombie apocalypse. However, ivy believes that because these zombies are infused with stuff from Frank, she can control them, so she sets off to do so, but later realizes she can do some good for the plant world, and loses her train of thought. Meanwhile, Harley fights along side Batgirl and Nightwing after getting into the Batcave with them. Oh yeah, and this episode was hilarious as well.

Episode Grade: A

2) The Rings Of Power (Amazon)

English Audio Description?: Yes

I’m on episode 4, by the way, so my concern right now is that the ensemble keeps growing, with characters I’m not sure if I’m supposed to follow. Last time, we saw the son who didn’t want to be a sailor, and the daughter who got invited into an apprenticeship.Well, she’s back, and now there’s some guy named Kevin… and I’m wondering HOW these two will affect the larger story. Like, do i need to know who Kevin is? Is he the one that will bind them all? How many characters will we be following by the end of the season for a show that 4 episodes in can’t even feature a check in on the original storylines presented because it’s already so expansive. It’s only going to get worse. I did think the action picked up a lot, but holy hell this cast seems to not want to stop adding new characters.

Episode Grade: A-

3) The Patient (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: YES

Finally. Thank God. I was about to write this show off, then I popped on Episode 3, tried (what I assumed would be pointlessly) to access audio description… and it was there. So I actually understood the whole episode. I learned so much about how the basement is designed and set up. And the episode, which featured some counseling, also revealed that the killer’s mother knows what’s happening, but has this dilemma where she can’t turn in her own son. Some great stuff now that I can understand this thing. Audio Description made a world of difference.

Episode Grade: A-

4) Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous (Netflix)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Kenji and his father returned to the other island, with an old foe that once tried to kill Kenji, who apparently was working for Kenji’s dad. At this point, the best thing that can happen for Kenji is foster care. Meanwhile, the other five are running from BRADS and whatever the hell that is living in the sewer. One quick question… aren’t these things monitored better on the second island? What is the upside of having a dinosaur living in the sewers? Concurrently, is this Killer Croc, and we’re about to have a DC crossover?

Episode Grade: B+

5) History 101 (Netflix)

English Audio Description?: Yes

An entire episode devoted to the evolution of music, MP3’s, piracy, and now streaming. A fun half hour for anyone who needed the cliff notes version of this. I knocked off points for total failure to mention the 8 Track, Cassette Tapes, and for trying to gaslight me into believing Spotify was the first of its kind, without ever mentioning Pandora.

Episode Grade: B

6) Gutsy (Apple Plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

So, while the hosts of this show bring very little to the table, as I said before, they get great interviews. This episode was centered around women who survived sexual assaults, with some powerful interviews, and a major focus on Mirska Hargitay. If Hillary had shown at any other point in her life that she could be this fun, she might have won an election. Her and Chelsea always seem to be laughing at something, and I’m glad they’re having fun.

Episode Grade: B

7) Virgin River (Netflix)

English Audio Description?: Yes

If you’ve followed me by now, you know I just put Virgin river at the same grade every week. I don’t know what to do with a show that is obviously terrible, but yet I still enjoy watching it. The acting isn’t great, the writing is terrible, but it’s a pretty escape from a lot of other heavier shows that I think that’s why it’s worked for so long. So here it is again. Right where it always is. no sense in trying to unearth anything.

Episode Grade: B

8) Tales Of The Walking Dead (AMC Plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Thank God. Audio Description. The narration for Tales Of the Walking Dead is some of the best I’ve ever heard. It perfectly encompasses what it knows it is narrating.A horror show about zombies. The gore is there, the violence, and it doesn’t hide it or try to generalize it in narration. it knows why you’re there. Part of me respected the hell out of this episode, which blended a haunted house story with the zombie apocalypse. However, there was an episode of the flagship series that did the haunted house thing better with Connie, and this one just poses questions about what exists in this world, and why no other character has run into anything like this in any of the other series that have multiple spinoffs. Trying to do an hour while balancing a ghost story with zombies is a daunting task, and one I’d love to see a director take on in a feature format. Here, it was just hard to get the whole thing out in one episode.
