The Too Much TV Roundup- October 10th

While many spent indigenous Peoples Day their own special way, I realized what day it was right before bed, thus causing a huge missed opportunity to watch something appropriate. I could have swung an episode of Reservation Dogs. But I did not.

1) House Of The Dragon (HBO/ HBo MAX)

English Audio Description?: Yes

After subjecting me to audio description last week about an uncle thrusting into his niece, in a way we are supposed to enjoy(?), House of The Dragon went for broke on the descriptions of future Cryptkeeper Visirus who was barely alive when we saw him at the top of the episode, letting us all know where this episode was headed. Every scene he was in gave the narration another chance to describe him in the most frail and decrepit form possible, highlighting just how beyond death’s door he was. This character has been melting away before our very eyes this whole season, and this episode was an inevitability. Unfortunately, his final words were very much NOT helpful. And thus, I assume everyone dies in Episode 9, and the show is over.

Episode Grade: A

2) Paper Girls (Amazon)

English Audio Description Available?: Yes

It was nice to see the Tiffany’s working together, but the punch of the episode came from Mac finally telling someone she is 4 years from death. So naturally, her reaction to the next projected time fold felt all the more real. However, Mac’s greatest foe is Amazon, who killed her about a month ago when they cancelled this kick ass series so some executive could buy another lake house.

Episode Grade: A

3) The undeclared War (Peacock)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Admittedly, I’ve been lukewarm on the first two episodes. Largely, because I’m tired of being told the name of the show in what are clearly exit and returns from commercial breaks. No other show reminds me so frequently what I’m watching. But in the third episode, they flip it and follow this story entirely from the perspective of a Russian art student, who has to return home to Russia, where he’s recruited first to spread misinformation on social media, and later as a hacker. It was rather compelling storyline, and with everything going on in the world right now, this is a rather important episode. Watching one of the Russian directors talk about their strategy for winning, by explaining that they work from assumed victory backwards in planning, giving their opponent the illusion of choice, but it’s the choice they wanted them to make all along, was rather chilling, especially considering the state of affairs.

Episode Grade: A

4) The Problem With Jon Stewart (Apple Plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

My only problem here was that I don’t think Stewart did enough on focusing on the fact that the drugs that the Arkansas lady are claiming are damaging and irreversible are in fact not. You can stop taking puberty blockers, and it doesn’t mean you’ve missed your shot at puberty. It’s like building a dam to hold back water, and making an argument that if the dam is left in place, the water will stay held their forever, when we all know what would happen if you removed the damn. If I stop taking my blood pressure medication, my blood pressure will rise. Telling someone you just want them to get a second opinion is bullshit, because by removing the option from the table altogether, a teen could get a hundred second opinions all stating the need for a specific care, but you’ve outlawed it. the law doesn’t require a second opinion, it bans doctors from being able to do their jobs. It’s like telling someone they have a freedom of religion, but banning all religious institutions that are not one specific denomination. How people can’t see through her is beyond me.

Episode Grade: A

5) Celebrity Jeopardy (ABC/Hulu)

English Audio Description?: Yes

I’ll admit, without spoiling this, I did not think that person would win. That’s all I’ll say about that. But, they played a much better game than I thought they would.

Episode Grade: A-

6) The Great North (FOX)

English Audio Description?: No

Some Autumn festival that caused weird things to happen historically over the years finally hit this family, though nothing was really off brand. Except someone really has a problem being sexually attracted to a truck shaped like a corn on the cob.

Episode Grade: B+

7) Surface (Apple Plus)

I was sitting in Episode 7, feeling like we had dropped all the big info, and wondering why we were still in this show. The hour was really long, and really only had two important developments. It was the least exciting episode, and I’m hoping the next is the Seaosn Finale, because it needs to go out on a high note, and it doe not have the steam to go three more right now.

Episode Grade: B
