Because I always accept feedback, I’ll lead today with a correction. Yesterday, I mentioned that The Masked Singer was available on FOX/Hulu, and I labeled it without audio description. That’s not entirely true. The audio description is available for those willing to watch it live, however that audio description does not translate to on demand airings after that, for example on hulu, where I watched the show. I think we’re all getting a little tired of audio description that doesn’t travel.
11) Night Court (NBC/Peacock)
English Audio Description?: Yes
Everyone is excited about the possibility of being invited to an elite club. while some of the cast is trying really hard to make comedy out of sand, they need better writers.
Episode Grade: C+
10) The Great North (FOX/hulu)
English Audio Description?: No
Beef’s birthday is such a nightmare for him that he gets himself thrown in jail for it so he can avoid what he believes is an impending surprise party. i suppose this show could ahve audio description live, but it should be made available everywhere.
Episode Grade: B
9) Boy Meets World (Disney Plus)
English Audio Description?: No
My childhood revisited. Cory stays up late with his dad, and fails a test. There’s a great debate about a father spending time when he can, and even how Feeney feels about it. however, what this really lacked was any notion that Cory knew any of the material anyway. He fell asleep during the test, but never gets any of the questions right anyway. Had he have studied, and failed a test he knew because he fell asleep this story would have meant something. Still, it’s nostalgic for me.
Episode Grade: B
8) Not Dead Yet (ABC/Hulu)
English Audio Description?: Yes
Mel gets sick, and is haunted by two music teachers, and her roommate who knows no social cues, but demands things when he falls ill. Props to Lauren Ash for turning in a great performance as Lexie, and even having a serious moment. She is stealing the show.
Episode Grade: B+
7) The Golden Girls (hulu)
English Audio Description?: No
Blanche’s sister is in town, and wrote a book that Blanche feels hits a little too close to home. Meanwhile, Dorothy’s ex sister-in-law stays with her, and that had most of the comedy. That, and Rose’s inane stories about St. Olaf.
Episode Grade: B+
6) The Connors (ABC/Hulu)
English Audio Description?: Yes
A division of plots. One that worked was a conflict long brewing between Dan and Neville, where Dan gets to step up big time to help out Neville. The other involves Darlene setting up Mark with a kid who works in the cafeteria with her, who turns out to be a little clingy.
Episode Grade: B+
5) Your honor (Paramount Plus)
English Audio Description?: No
lack of audio description really hurt my ability to understand how this show ends. Though, from what I was able to find online, I was a little disappointed in some of the choices. As far as what I could understand, the acting was on point. Specifically, Bryan Cranston and hope Davis.
Episode Grade: B+, Season 2 Grade: A-
4) So Help Me Todd (CBS/Paramount Plus)
English Audio Description?: Yes
While I enjoyed the hour, and it’s boldness, I wish it had toned down a bit and been a bit more serious. The closest comparison I can come up with is Boston Legal, and every once in a while, they would reign in an episode so the weight of the moment could be felt. Here, it’s all still a big joke. A creative big joke, but still a joke.
Episode Grade: A-
3) Lucky Hank (AMC Plus)
English Audio Description?: No
Another new show for Bob Odenkirk to show off his acting prowess, in a clever comedy about a failed writer stuck working as the program chair at a random college. In the pilot episode, he’s unapologetic, and well fleshed out. However, it took me a minute to figure out that was his wife, and his daughter felt like an afterthought. The way the episode ended was classic though. It’s mind boggling how AMC keeps creating new shows without audio description, when they could be helping these new future hit dramas to have more attention.
2) American Auto (NBC/Peacock)
English Audio Description?: Yes
Katherine has the gang hang out with her after work, and pretty quickly they figure out it’s because her life isn’t that great right now.
Episode Grade: A
1) Dear Edward (Apple Plus)
A nice Season Finale that left the door open for a season 2, but also wraps a lot of stories so that Season 1 feels complete in case they get cancelled.
Episode Grade: A
