The Too Much TV Roundup- 06/18/23

Juneteenth! No TV news, just the fact that today is a holiday!

12) XO Kitty (Netflix)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Renewed

It’s not that the series is bad, it just happens to be in 12th. I honestly only watched the first of the three films this series is a spinoff of, so I didn’t quite understand who the character was, and while it does a fair amount of explaining, I think it assumed the bulk of the audience were already fans.

Episode Grade: B-

11) Home Improvement (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

That pumpkin scene at the beginning… is pumpkin racing a thing? Otherwise, this episode just reminded the audience that mark is alive. It’s been a few episodes.

Episode Grade: B-

10) Gremlins: Secrets of The Mogwai (MAX)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: not Yet Renewed

I think it is walking a fine line of being made for kids, or made for nostalgic purposes. It’s not quite as interesting as the Jurassic World Series, but the next few episodes could set a stronger tone. The first episode just does a lot of explaining, and character introduction. It’s important for anyone who has no idea what a Mogwai is.

9) Clone high (mAX)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: not yet Renewed

While I didn’t finish the original, and jumped to the reboot, I could tell immediately that it had a new fire inside of it. This is produced by Phil Lord and Chris miller, and while not all the jokes land, and i don’t understand what happened to Gandhi, the pilot deals with being cancelled, and it was occasionally funny. However, they introduced a Frida character, and made some serious references to who she was historically, as they do for Confucius and Topher, but I felt there was no attempt at linking Harriet Tubman to any reference from her past.

Episode Grade: B

8) The Muppets Mayhem (Disney plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Not Yet Renewed

A rift grows in the band when Animal starts to do his own thing. Can the relationships be repaired?

Episode Grade: B

7) Young Sheldon (MAX)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Renewed

Sheldon hates fishing. Dad likes fishing. Mom wants them to spend more time together.

Episode Grade: B

6) Doug (Paramount Plus)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

OMG. i totally remembered this episode. like, I must ahve seen this a bunch as a kid. Porkchop falls in love, and Doug feels like he’s lost his friend, and the second half is picture day where Doug thinks he has a big nose thanks to Skeeter’s little brother.

Episode Grade: B+

5) The Walking Dead: Dead City (AMC Plus)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: unknown

We are a little further in the future from the flagships finale. There is a mention of hilltop. Mostly, Maggie’s cabin was raided by someone who used to be a savior and mimic’s Negan’s whistle, and they kidnapped Herschel, which explains why Maggie needs Negan again to accompany her. Also, the police/marshals/magistrates want to cut Negan in half, so there’s that. The lack of audio description is frustrating, considering AMC Plus is capable, and there once again is a non-verbal character. Negan does take the non verbal girl he rescued somewhere safe before heading off with Maggie, but i didn’t even know she was there until Negan talked about her backstory.

Episode Grade: B+

4) All In The family (FreeVee)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

Archie goes too Far. he raids Mike’s room, goes through his shit, and basically everyone moves out (at least temporarily). Even Edith was mad, or at least as mad as her character is allowed to get.

Episode Grade: A-

3) Platonic (Apple plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Unknown

Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne have a great back and forth, and that dynamic will carry an otherwise bland show. I thought Rogen was terrific in the pilot. He was funny, and he handled everything his character was supposed to go through perfectly. this is one where the stars are the reason to watch.

Episode Grade: A-

2) 911 (FOX/Hulu)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Moving To ABC

After doing their job perfectly, over eager cops end up finding out that Cap lied about his past (but about what?), and after this cool ocean’s 11 style episode, Peter Krause gets sidelined. permanently? i have a feeling his crew is going to have something to say about his suspension.

Episode Grade: A

1) The Great (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Hopefully Renewed

This wins the day simply due to Maxim. I’m not fully sure I paid much attention to this character, but this little boy is given a lot to do this episode, and he’s fucking hilarious. huzzah!

Episode Grade: A
