The Too Much TV Lineup: 07/03/23

We will not go quietly without a fight! Today, we celebrate, our Independence Day!

If you have a little kid, show them that movie, and tell them it really happened, and that’s the reason we celebrate July 4th. Just as a little test. See if they believe you. Anyway, welcome to Earth!

16) The Adventures Of The Gummi Bears (Disney Plus)

English Audio Description?: no

Status: Ended

well, I promised myself ten episodes of this series I loved as a kid, and part of some of these nostalgic trips is that not every show is hitting like i expected. There are parts of me that hear those voices, and i can imagine what they looked like to me as a kid, and how they bounced around. i remember owning a Gummi Bear plush toy as a child, and singing along with the theme song. It’s a memory that i wish i could share with my own kids, if i had them. For now, I think I’m going to roll the Gummi’s into semi-retirement. I’m sure Disney Plus will keep it in my watchlist, but there are other shows I’d rather put to the test.

Episode Grade: C+

15) Designing Women (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

I suppose for a show that is trying to capture the Golden Girls audience, they would tread similar storylines. So, of course the Designing Women find themselves in a plot where they are mistaken for “ladies of the night”. I think had this episode come in a later season when these characters were a bit more established, it would work better.

Episode Grade: B-

14) Trophy Wife (ABC)

English Audio Description?: no

Status: Ended

Part of the reason I stand behind this one-season wonder is that this was a terrific cast that clearly had all the right chemistry from day one. It had the kind of potential that warranted a second season. This episode, which had multiple storylines featured lice, and Dad dealing with the dispute over a teddy bear. Not an iconic moment for this series.

Episode Grade: B-

13) Home Improvement (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

We’re in Season 7, and by now, Jonathan Taylor Thomas’s star power was eclipsing the series. So, of course he had an episode centered around him, as he volunteered his time to make old people feel better. He connects with one, only to later find out that she’s taken a turn, and it gives him an opportunity to show some range.

Episode Grade: B

12) 911 (hulu)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Moving To ABC

Well, I’ll say the grade was affected by the lack of audio description. in what is obviously the first of two parts, a tsunami has hit LA, and water is everywhere. 911 is working overtime, but seemingly everyone is in danger. It was really hard to keep up with not just the series regulars, but also the episode specific victims looking to be saved. Audio description. Accessibility matters.

Episode Grade: B/Unwatchable

11) Fatal Attraction (Paramount Plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Should Be Limited

After sitting through the 7th episode, I wondered why there was one more episode, and then the answer came in the final moments. I still don’t know why this isn’t being considered a limited series. That bugs me.

Episode Grade: B+

10) Game Of Thrones (MAX)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Ended

It’s a character building episode. The best part was the Lannister/Tyrell conversation with the heads of those families having a gloves off conversation. Lady Tyrell certainly can hold her own, but she’s no match for an evil Lannister. Speaking of, Tyrion is still feeling trapped between a rock and a hard place, Jamie may get to go home but Brianne’s fate would be unknown and he doesn’t want to leave her, and there’s also a substantial plot with jon Snow and Egrete where he saves her life even though her own people weren’t so keen on doing so.

Episode Grade: B+

9) Class Of 09 (hulu)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Limited

The algorithm is getting more out of control. The story does a nice job at weaving the story, but sometimes the constant timeline flipping is a bit confusing.

Episode Grade: B+

8) A Small Light (Nat Geo)

English audio Description?: Yes

Status: Limited

I feel like we are in an inevitable march to the fates of the Frank’s. I appreciate the story they are trying to tell, as this story is always worth telling, but six episodes in, and at this point it feels more like we’re stalling.I think there’s only just so long a series can maintain a plot like this without revealing that the Frank’s get taken.

Episode Grade: A-

7) Community (Netflix)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: The movie is Coming

You can see the gang is still being built. The super crazy antics this show is memorable for haven’t fully occurred, but there are glimpses. It’s also weird to see Ken Jeong playing a rather normal version of his character right now.

Episode Grade: A-

6) Friends (MAX)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Ended

This episode is great for no other reason than Ross’s exchange with Isabella Rossellini. However, on a secondary note, Phoebe hanging out with her brother provided some laughs, as he is really really stupid.

Episode Grade: A-

5) Beef (Netflix)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: limited

What a bizarre ending. but, my favorite part of the episode, and honestly probably the series, was that opening shot of the conversation the crows were having. It is kind of an exploration of how things can go horribly wrong. not my favorite limited series of the year, but it got weirder, and better.

Episode Grade: A-, Series Grade: B+

4) Justified (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: no

Status: is Being Revived In A Few Weeks

Well, Season 1 is in the bag. The main villain got capped, Raylon may have gained a new ally, and there are still bad guys out there to pursue in Season 2. With all the shooting in this episode, audio description would have been helpful. Though, they do at least verbally confirm out loud the major death, whereas 911 was far more ambiguous.

Episode Grade: A-, Season 1 Grade: A-

3) Fired on mars (MAX)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Unknown

It’s funny how big of an impact Thomas Haden Church makes in the end. honestly, the finale really took Jeff mostly out of the equation, and had a lot of other things going on. But, the open door ending makes me wonder… will there be a season 2?

Episode Grade: A-, Season 1 Grade: B+

2) Young Sheldon (MAX)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Renewed

Any episode that can make mee laugh out loud is worth getting up here. not just a smile on my face, but this episode earned its A. Annie Potts was great. The whole thing centered around Sheldon playing Dungeons and Dragons, and then Sheldon researching all the religions based on his Mom trying to get him to go to Sunday School because D and D is evil. There were plenty of great moments. I even forgave the weak ending about Sheldon creating a religion centered around Math.

Episode Grade: A

1) Sweet Tooth (Netflix)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Renewed

Season 2 was so much better than Season 1, and it made good on its promise to bring things to a head and close this chapter. There are a handful of major deaths in the season finale, and the 3rd and final season is set up. But, why on earth did they leave that map behind? Like, WTF?

Episode Grade: A, Season 2 Grade: A
