The Too Much TV Roundup- 08/18/23

Well, Amazon done gone and pissed me the hell off. be careful what you wish for kids, because sometimes you get TV news. Amazon, in an effort to endear themselves with their subscribers, has reversed their second season renewals on both The Peripheral and A League of Their Own. The last one was baffling, because I know it was granted a tax waiver, so it was even cheaper to produce (plus, I thought they had already started filming). Apparently, the service that put so many years between seasons of Good Omens that people assumed it was dead, is worried about getting these second seasons out in a reasonable time. Fuck you, Amazon.

And now, we move onto the roundup.

11) My Adventures With Superman (MAX)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Not Yet Renewed

I think the voice work on the show is terrific. But, I question where this version is aimed. It feels a bit more grown up, but not really. Teenagers? In a world of adult animation, I’m struggling to watch something this mundane while I know I could just watch Harley Quinn. It’s not really funny, or subversive. The fact that it comes off the Adult Swim block baffles me. It’s an underwhelming show.

Episode Grade: C+

10) Justified (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: no

Status: Revival now Airing

Of all the shows I watched without audio description, this one was the show that had me the most lost. Boyd trying to explain how his thing is not a pyramid scheme was fun, and the timely storyline of Oxy distribution in Kentucky seems like a solid storyline. Neal mcDonagh is trying to step up as the season’s central villain, but the big shoes left behind by Margo Martindale’s Mags are impossible to filll. I’m about halfway through Season 3.

9) Clarissa Explains it All (Paramount Plus)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

Ferguson is running for class President which is annoying the hell out of Clarissa. She also hates how her parents spend so much time helping him. But, soon Ferguson will need her help, and will she give it?

Episode Grade: B-

8) 8) Minx (Starz)

English Audo Description?: No

Status: Not yet Renewed

I’m happy to have this show back, but frustrated that it was saved by a streaming service that has no plan of accessibility for the blind and visually impaired. I reached out to the Starz DIE team at the beginning of the month about that whole “Inclusivity” thing, and I’m supposed to be getting some response at some point. It’s been weeks, and they can’t formulate a productive response about why they don’t do audio description? Not sure what would have been described or not in this episode, but it did center around a screening of Deep Throat, and I’m sure that in the party sequence, things were happening. I felt like I was missing out on pretty much everything except the lead performances being still exceptional.

Episode Grade: B

7) Boy Meets World (Disney Plus)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

Easier to follow, as the episode basically is a simple joke gone wrong. Shawn changes the headline in the school newspaper to change Mr Feeny’s name to Weeny and Cory gets pegged for it. But, just like he covered for Shawn when he blew up a mailbox, he covered for him again, and remained a true friend to Shawn (who couldn’t step up or he’d go to military school).

Episode Grade: B+

6) The Wonder Years (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Again, Summer Burnoffs Are Not Good Things

Dean gets to play Peter Pan in a school play, while his older brother campaigns for a Republican, much to his father’s chagrin. It’s a very odd episode that left me conflicted, because it talked about how the Republican Party originally stated back with the ideals of Lincoln, assuming that applied over 100 years later. bruce really fails to grasp the civil right movement, yet brings up Dixiecrats. I’m not sure who wrote this episode or who it was for, but it felt like they were trying to have their cake and eat it too. I appreciate the attempt at a conversation, but I enjoyed the episode because of Dean’s Peter Pan storyline, and his possible budding relationship with a white girl. Will they go there?

Episode Grade: B+

5) Everwood (FreeVee)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

Andy has a patient with bruises who might be a sleepwalker, while there is some weird UFO type phenomenon going on. It’s such a weird episode to stumble into at the same time all those files on UFO’s are being declassified. But the big thing is Ephram is having a piano recital, where he meets Kate, who is really talented, but doesn’t get the final spot. Turns out his grown adult teacher is sleeping with his student, and he’s leaving Everwood because her parents found out. Ephram reads him the riot act, but he shrugs it off.

Episode Grade: B+

4) The Good Wife (Paramount Plus)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Spinoff Coming At Midseason

I still believe this show needs audio description, but this was the first episode that featured Mike colter’s morally questionable Lamonte, and that moment with Will in the courtroom might be Josh Charles’s best in the series. The judge was clearly biased, and he set her straight without getting in trouble, and then flipped the prosecutor on his ass by finding out that he was sleeping with the victim.

Episode Grade: A-

3) Jack Ryan (Amazon)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Final Season

The action stuff was happening with Jack and the gang as they met up with Chow Fa and plot how to destroy the triggers and get Chow’s family out. However, the developments happening at home on US Soil really felt more shocking in terms of where this conspiracy leads. Not to get spoilery, but this season started with Jack having a bag over his head, and then we flashed back. So, we knew that moment was always coming. It didn’t surprise me that it came, which is why this episode didn’t win the day.

Episode Grade: A-

2) The Lincoln Lawyer (Netflix)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Not Yet Renewed

Episode 7 is the best of the season so far, as the trial starts, and mickey is trying to get an FBI letter confirmed.First time this season I thought Lisa might actually be innocent.

Episode Grade: A

1) Glamorous (Netflix)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Not Yet Renewed

I hope Netflix sticks with this. I hear the ratings aren’t great. I enjoyed this rush to get the Pride campaign out, and how this show manages to find a place for everyone in the ensemble to always feel like they are contributing to the narrative.I think the only character not represented was Dismal Failure. But, Marcos told his ex a very specific gesture wouldn’t even bring him back, and then finally hooked up with Ben, to find that apology waiting for him at home. What will he do?
