While not TV news, I am always looking around the inter webz for Oscar thoughts, and I do love the people predicting the Oscars who acknowledge that it’s weird that everyone is predicting the same things. I know, which is why I’m actually trying not to. This time last year, we had Tom Cruise and Hugh Jackman as frontrunners. Certainly no one expected Andrea Riseborough, and after everyone saw Blonde, it was assumed to be dead in the race. Brian Tyree Henry seemed like an impossible nominee, and most people still had Paul Dano. I don’t believe Michelle Williams declared her intention to run in the lead, and we were still talking about which one of the Women Talking would be nominated in Supporting Actress. Claire Foy? Jessie Buckley? Both? So while a handful of nominees seemed like a lock and stayed one (like Brendan Fraser or Ke huy Kwon), the rest of this was a whole lotta shaking going on. If we are all predicting the same, we are all wrong. Even though this is the TV roundup, I’ll say I’ve got my eye on Ferrari, which could put Adam Driver and penelope Cruz in the race. I find it incredibly interesting that Neon went for a Michael Mann film. If you are into predicting the Oscars, take a big swing.
And now, back to television.
8) Justified (Hulu)
English Audio Description?: Yes
Status: Revival Just Ended, I’ll Get To It
Raylon is benched temporarily from the case we know he’ll end up closing, meanwhile our favorite Boyd is running around with hookers who rob. That’s fun. Too bad Justified still doesn’t have audio description, and is really only 50-60% intelligible for blind and visually impaired users without it.
Final Grade: B-
7) Mad Men (AMC Plus)
English Audio Description?: No
Status: Ended
Another show that could use audio description, because there are so many characters now it’s hard to keep up. Don is out in California, and Pete is trying to work with the future of space age.
Episode Grade: B-
7) The Good Wife (Paramount Plus)
English Audio Description?: No
Status: Spinoff Coming Soon
Alicia DJ Will still have this thing, but also a case where a girl might have killed her roommate while on a sleep aid. Or, maybe it was someone else? Also, Diane continues to flirt with Kurt, the forbidden Republican fruit. Narratively, this was easier to follow without AD, but there were moments that I needed it. One example had Kalinda opening up a locker, and we didn’t know what was in it until she tells Alicia about it later.
Episode Grade: B+
5) The Witcher (Netflix)
English Audio Description?: Yes
Status: Renewed
The best thing about this Season 2 episode was Siri doing that American Ninja Warrior style challenge. i bet that was in the game, and it probably was super fun to play.Otherwise, it’s a lot of Yennifer and her feelings.
Episode Grade: B+
4) Billions (Paramount Plus)
English Audio Description?: Yes
Status: Final Season
Even though I’m 1 season behind, and frustrated at the lack of Axe, Prince’s storyline seems to be painting him as the opposite of Axe. But is he? Meanwhile, when the AG offers to help the Doormen union, is it safe to trust Chuck?
Episode Grade: B+
3) The Wonder Years (Hulu)
English Audio Description?: Yes
Status: Not Yet Cancelled
It’s Grandpa’s birthday, so Dean’s uncle is in town, but it’s his cousin that has a big secret. So while the men have an alternate storyline that is just sibling rivalry, the women have a very serious topic to discuss.
Episode Grade: A-
2) Good Omens (Amazon)
English Audio Description?: Yes
Status: Not Yet Renewed
Almost done with Season 1. Everyone is converging on the end of the world. It looks like Adam might be having a change of personality. but, Azraiel had to creatively find a new body, and Crowley is ready to save this world from the apocalypse, along with some other minor characters. The cast for this is insane, by the way. Brian Cox, Mirelle Enos, Jon Hamm, and others popping up.
Episode Grade: A
1) Full Circle (MAX)
English Audio Description?: Yes
Status: Limited
I felt bad for a character who got the rug pulled out from them and taken off the case, since they basically were the only person to figure this out, and their boss is corrupt. Also, surprise, Claire Danes is playing a bitch! That scene between her and her mother was great. Her mom has clearly stopped caring about keeping up appearances.
