The Too Much TV Roundup- 09/09/23

I apparently need to binge Virgin River, because the internet can’t stop spoiling it for me. it’s been out for 3 days and has ten episodes. Everyone calm down. I know far too much about a season I haven’t watched yet.

11) Hey Dude (Paramount Plus)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

I’m just surprised this is available, but it could use audio description. They do head out onto paths. I’m not sure if this was on location or on set, but I’ll guess on location just to allow the horses the freedom to go somewhere. But, Buddy hates living at the ranch, falls in love with a horse and runs away. no, I will not rephrase that.

Episode Grade: C

10) Painkiller (Netflix)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Limited

The success of this seems to rest on if Uzo Aduba has a triumphant monologue, because we are back in this “not DopeSick” world again. The direction was all over the place for the fifth episode. Little things bugged me. So Richard is mocking the prosecutors by not attending the meeting, and playing with his dog in the hallway. Fine. It should not be that loud. For a man who knows how shady he is, there’s no way his rooms and offices have so little soundproofing, and are designed for massive echoes. Also, while Taylor Kitsch was very dramatic in this episode, it’s been a while since he’d had a pill when he makes that plea to his stepson, and he seemed more levelheaded than in every other moment in that episode. There were just so many little moments that distracted me from the impact of the storyline. It’s still a powerful story, but Peter Berg’s direction is not helping.

9) 9) Foundation (Apple Plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Not Yet Renewed

Harry and the gang are kidnapped by locals. The clones begin to wonder if there’s more to life than what they’ve been given. This show still confuses me, but in the way that I feel like my brain is expanding. Not because its poorly written, but because it flies over my head sometimes.

Episode Grade: B

8) Survival Of The Thickest (Netflix)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Not Yet Renewed

Nicole Byer pops up as a guest star, but the most interesting thing this time around was the fight between roommates. I gotta agree with the one who thinks letting some dude sleep in her bed is a bridge too far. I can’t even imagine what I would have said or done if I had come home and some person who isn’t me was in my bed.

Episode Grade: B

7) The Wheel Of Time (Amazon)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Renewed?

I feel like there were characters in that final scene in Episode 2 that I was supposed to remember, but I didn’t. I think my biggest problem was NineEve following the one lady to her room only to be yelled at and threatened. You want to do the arch challenge after that? Why do you want to work with someone with that temper who everyone says you should not be working with. And why did she start crying and walk away from the door when the part of the conversation she heard was Egwein lamenting how she wishes her friend was around more. The writing for this episode was frustrating at times.

Episode Grade: B

6) The Lincoln Lawyer (Netflix)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Renewed

Spoiler Warning: So this was the season finale, and I was actually appreciating that Mickey finally defending someone who was innocent, as all roads led to someone else for a change. But no, we had to prove taht even though she wasn’t guilty of that thing, she was guilty of something else. I also am annoyed that this audio description doesn’t tell us what is being said in Spanish. It’s my understanding that the sighted audience is getting subtitles, so this is unacceptable.

Episode Grade: B+, Season 2 Grade: B+

5) Smash (Roku)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

Julia has some strong redemptive moments when she and her husband have to actually parent leo, who starts to fail all of his classes. Also, the new movie star is taking over. She has some thoughts, and is not a great singer. I’m sure she’ll last.

Episode Grade: B+

4) Mad Men (AMC Plus)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

While Peggy telling Pete finally about the baby was certainly a powerful moment, my favorite was how the room reacted when Don walked off. Duck had planned to be President, and had his ideas of running things, and told Pete that don would fall in line because his contract has a non-compete clause. imagine the shock to everyone when Don reveals he has no contract. Looks like it’s Duck who will be left “not competing”. Yes, this show still has a lot of problems with not having audio description, but that moment was set up so nicely, and the payoff was so strong.

Episode Grade: B+

3) Veep (MAX)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Ended

Selina has to negotiate a deal during her daughter’s 21st birthday party. Plus, the press thinks she’s a liar. The best part is watching Jonah trying to pick up women in the worst ways possible.

Episode Grade: A-

2) Breeders (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Final Season

As the grandparents prepare for new shoes and a birthday, Luke continues to grapple with his anxiety as being a dad looms over him. The kid can’t even drive a car.

Episode Grade: A

1) 10 Year Old Tom (MAX)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Not Yet renewed

Tom faces backlash in the first part because the principal asks Tom to tell Nelson’s mom to stop showing so much cleavage at school, which leads to Tom getting cancelled. The second part felt very timely, as a bunch of kids learn that their ancestors were colonizers, and ask their parents whoa re furious that their kids are learning this. There’s a bit more to this half of the story, but I loved seeing that play out.
