The Too Much TV Roundup- 09/13/23

*NSYNC is back! That’s your entire news bulletin at the top. I know it’s short, but, they did record a new song for the next Trolls movie. Also, apparently they made another Trolls movie.

11) Chip and Dale’s Rescue Rangers (Disney Plus)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

I don’t expect linear storytelling, but to sudddenly watch an episode where I guess the Rangers are on another continent, and their aircraft is being worshipped by flightless Kiwi birds really made me think how the hell they got there. Then the whole episode becomes about Dale stubbing his toe and being unable to work. Someone got paid to write this. We are only six episodes in and this feels like an episode where they started doing cocaine and running out of ideas.

Episode Grade: C+

10) Doug (Paramount Plus)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

I’m now into Season 2! Doug plays detective to find out who stole Bebe’s radio. And then in the second part Doug wrote a love song about Patty. Neither of these do I remember from my childhood.

Episode Grade: B-

9) ALF (Peacock)

English Audio Description? No

Status: Ended

I decided to finally see what ALF was. The only version I was familiar with as a kid was animated, and starred in my favorite animated movie growing up Cartoon All Stars to The Rescue. You think you had a weird childhood? I win. Watch that on YouTube and tell me I don’t win. But, I like ALF, because it knows exactly what kind of show it is, almost like it assumes it will be cancelled at any moment, and never tries to not be TV’s answer to ET.

Episode Grade: B

8) 911 (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Moving To ABC

Hen is keeping secrets, but this episode tries to give us an Athena fake out like they might kill off Angela Bassett not in a season finale, as well as Michael getting some test results. There’s some action here I would have preferred audio description for, but mostly it’s a lot of feelings. We even cut back to our 911 operators still processing from that hostage situation a few episodes back.

7) Winning Time (MAX)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Not Yet Renewed

The coach in this series needs to be smacked. He’s obnoxious. He’s got this Napoleon complex where if he feels like something subversive is happening, he absolutely will burn it all down. Maybe this guy is a legend, but fuck this guy. Rewrite history, fire him, and hire someone who doesn’t make my skin crawl.

Episode Grade: B

6) Hoff The Récord (britBox)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

I would have loved audio description for that cage match, but The hoff having this bizarre new manager was a fun episode. “You can’t just walk into the National Theatre and say David Hasselhoff wants to play macBeth.” It’s a fun show.

Episode Grade: B+

4) Mad Men (AMC Plus)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

The British Are Coming! I’ve made it to Season 3, and Jared HArris is now on the show. His secretary is a brat. And someone got fired. Had the show had audio description, I might have cared who it was.

Episode Grade: B+

4) Ahsoka (Disney Plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Limited

I hear bob Iger is just going to use that surprise appearance now in every Disney show. That person is now hired to a perpetual contract, since they like to use them to just pop in apparently like it ain’t no thing.

Episode Grade: A-

3) Glamorous (Netflix)

English Audio Descrption?: Yes

Status: Not Yet Renewed

I fear for this show’s second season possibilities, but I think its fun. The gang figures out a way to save the brand, and marco finally drops Parker.

Episode Grade: A-

2) Fleabag (Amazon)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Ended

I had never watched this before, and decided to check it out. It was a solid half hour, with Phoebe Waller Bridge having some great moments. I laughed several times, mostly at the beginning with the entire joke becoming about anal sex. But even later, when she gets caught starting to pleasure herself to a Barack Obama speech. My favorite is that the audio description refers to her as Fleabag. Brilliant.

Episode Grade: A

1) The Bear (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Not Yet Renewed

The entire episode revolves around the hours before their soft opening. Lots of drama building up. The tension is there, and we are left with the cliffhanger of whether or not they will succeed or fail. One of the strongest dramas on television. I’m not sure why this is marketed as a comedy. It’s far more dramatic.
