Best Episode: The Pitt, Runner Up: The Sandman
Best Audio Description: the Sandman, Runner Up: Stick
Best Performance: Owen Wilson (Stick), Runner Up: Gwendolyn Christie (The Sandman)
best Moment Of Audio Description: The Cain and Abel Show (The Sandman), Runner Up: Headshot (Peaky Blinders)
The Sandman- Dream goes to Hell only to find that Lucifer really doesn’t care, and has taken this as an opportunity to exit Hell. Gwendolyn Christie as Lucifer did such a terrific job showing us this side of Lucifer that was just exhausted after many millennia spent maintaining the darkest realm. She wants out. She wants a simple life. She gives the key to hell to Dream, and has him cut off her wings. Then, the second half of the episode is Dream entertaining a wide variety of mythological beings who want to control hell. This is where we get the Cain and Abel Show reference, as Cain does a series of really disturbing magic tricks that were (unfortunately) well described. Now we know how the sausage gets made.
Ginny And Georgia- why Ginny doesn’t just tell her dad what’s up is beyond me. She instead only tells him that she hurts herself, but never really explores why, or why she doesn’t want to be home. Meanwhile, Georgia ends up being a little entitled, all things considered, considering we see that she can recognize Ginny burned the plant. So she knows Ginny knows, and decides to take the worst road possible when Ginny returns. What even is this show? Meanwhile, I’m fairly certain we’re setting Abby up for suicide. As far as the audio description, done by XTrax, we have an error. In the scene where Ginny is listening to her father talk with the rest of his family about Ginny, and she’s somewhere they can’t see her, it keeps cutting to her. once, it referred to her as Georgia, who is not in this scene. She’s not even in the house.
Stick- For a comedy, it doesn’t get many opportunities to shine on the audio description front, but as our young golf prodigy explored his first time with Zero, the description was nice. Moving from Marco Polo, to a little pool house, with a floatie. Also, Santi clocked the ring. but, seriously, isn’t Santi the worst? Talk about flying off the handle. Jesus.
Nine Perfect Strangers- Nicole Kidman’s show ends, but with an open door for a third season. I’m on the fence. the season was so uneven that it felt like some characters barely did anything. I still don’t get Wolfie’s choice at the end, because she’s really underdeveloped. However, some nice performances from Christine Baranski, Murray Bartlett, and Dolly Deleon show that if you keep to a more traditional balanced structure, you get to work with some amazing talent and explore some unique characters with specific perspectives. The audio description here was fine, though if you start losing your mind, it is because these characters start being followed by things that don’t exist, nd the description just goes for it as is. So, when Nicole Kidman’s masha is traipsing through the snow trailed by Tatiana, her dead daughter, you’re probably wondering what is going on. Everyone is high. The Shrooms.
The Pitt- so, this one just got a nomination by the ACB for their annual audio description awards for Best Description for a TV Series. i didn’t hate the nominees this year, because we didn’t nominate Percy Jackson. This episode, like all the others, was emotionally complex, and leaned in right at the end there with reports of a mass shooting. considering what they spend most of the episode talking about, some people are going to spiral because they didn’t think reporting someone was as important as some others did. I’m excited for the next episode, because of how this show handles ensemble drama.
Sullivan’s Crossing- I was a little bored. it feels somewhat safe, but it also has these dark little subject matters thrown in. the show is loosely a medical drama, though a lot of the drama has to do with our lead maintaining being a doctor. The audio description on Netflix isn’t quite balanced where an audience would like it, and it is too soft in some parts. It just gets kind of obliterated in some parts, especially when there’s just a blaring pop/rock song.
Patience- Now it is starting to find its footing, as Patience starts working other cases. I like this show. it has a lot of potential behind it. I’m grateful for the audio description, and for a lot of people, they’ll like the flatness of it. For me, it feels adjacent too much to TTS.
Peaky blinders- I picked headshot for the extremely specific headshot description. We’re told exactly where the bullet enters, just above the left eyebrow. And then the after gore splatter. I feel like so many times we just get “He shoots him in the head”, and not the literal actual entry point. So, props for that. I do miss Sam Neill.
King Of The Hill- hank catches a hooligan, who is dating LouAnn, and his truck suffers for it. Even though I couldn’t see it, when hank goes to retrieve his car, which is clearly in a state of disarray, his comment about how they stripped the car down even the spark plugs for the drug search was funny. No audio description yet.
The daily Show- Back from a two week hiatus, Stewart interviewed a guy from 60 Minutes, and definitely tilted at a windmill tht is Paramount.
Bosch Legacy- What a weak ass Series Finale. Yes, we’re getting another spinoff this week for the character we just met in the finale, but that was the second goodbye to harry Bosch? To Maddie? To crate and Barrel? Those two need a spinoff. #JusticeForCrateAndBarrel
