The Sandman- Delerium visits Dream because she has this feeling that they really need their missing brother, and she hopes Dream will help her find him. dream allows himself to again be influenced by Desire, who suggest the only reason he wants to go to the waking world is for Nada. So, Dream goes with delerium, where they are led by Wanda, their personal driver for this adventure (who has her own deeply personal story), as they try and find former friends of their brother Destruction. Ultimately, this doesn’t work in their favor, as someone seems to be trying to bump the people off their list. At the end, it misses a bit for me because Desire shows up and accuses Dream of never planning on finding the brother, but if that were true, the entire scene he just had with Ishtar is pointless. they could have discussed something else, as no one was around, and Dream could have just told Delerium she didn’t know where he was. However, he asks, an answer that only benefits him, in. Quest to find his brother. TV writers. Come on. As far as the description goes, and this might have been tackled in season 1 and I just forgot, but there’s this large thing that captures Delirium and I needed a dash of size relativity to understand just how big he was. Otherwise, great work. And again, maybe we tackled that in Season 1 and I forgot.
The Buccaneers- Everything mostly works out at the end of Season 1, and Nan gets her sister away from her abusive husband. That little bombshell about Nan’s real mother being at the wedding is clearly a season two problem. If I don’t do a full review of Season 1, my quick thoughts would be that after trying this a second time, i found it to be entertaining inconsequential fluff, with a varying spread of performances, where some feel more of the period than others. We have a lot of young actresses who feel and sound very modern, and they can’t shake that. in comparison, it is something the cast of The Guilded Age does rather well. Young actresses like Taissa Farmiga fit the given period. But it is those casting choices that makes The Buccaneers more of a broadly entertaining program, and less of a prestige drama. it seems content in what it is. The audio description, pixel Logic narrated by Roy Samuelson, is functional, but could definitely immerse us more in the locations and costumes whenever possible. Take advantage of the specific setting, don’t side step it.
Adults- the three stories this week are on a spectrum, for sure. In one story, Samir spends most of his arc trying to unclog a toilet, to rather hilariously disgusting effect, while the other two guys end up babysitting a young woman who travelled to NYC to get an abortion, and is staying with them temporarily. She is a bit much, and it is interesting to see these “adults”, who aren’t much older than their houseguest be constantly torn down by someone right in the middle of Gen Alpha and Z. Meanwhile, the girls are off teaching kids to dance, which just doesn’t go as expected. The audio description is as it usually is, for a show that relies heavily on dialogue. it did pay attention to what Samir was trying to do in the bathroom, but most of the jokes land because of the dialogue.
We Were liars- I don’t enjoy discussing the AD every episode. I’m just powering through this to finish it. Maybe I’ll review the whole season, maybe not. there was this one point where the main girl (Cadence?) says something about how this place is always supposed to be perfect, before an adult gives her a staggering dose of reality. I did enjoy that.
Patience- Our legislators just defunded PBS, which will affect how we are able to access rather safe and mundane programs like Patience. This isn’t woke, or offensive, it’s just another crime procedural with a twist. But, it has audio description. It will be interesting (and likely tragic) to see if PBS’s commitment to audio description wanes with their lack of funding. PBS still has private donors, and individual programs have sponsors, but the budget cuts hadn’t even happened and PBS years ago needed help to cover the costs of Sesame Street (now Netflix is partnering). This isn’t a review of the episode, but I watched Patience just because they defunded PBS and I wanted to have a reason to discuss it.
Back To the Frontier- don’t come for robust audio description. But, I also kinda feel the pain. Whoever is doing the hosting/narrating of the show talks in all the spots the AD team would, leaving very little room for anything else. It’s just contemporary families roughing it. They try to build shelter.
Poker Face- My second show of the day narrated by Roy Samuelson, who gets some real coverage in his work. this is part 1 of the two part finale. I’m a little worried that Peacock hasn’t picked this up yet for a third season, especially considering they seem perpetually unable to break Natasha Lyonne into the Actress race. It did manage to get in the guest acting category, and peacock really doesn’t have a lot of Emmy contenders otherwise. In fact, neither does NBC. The whole brand could use a shot in the arm that isn’t just The Traitors. but, Charlie’s friend is framed for murder, which sets Charlie on some looney plot. Honestly, there’s a lot happening in part one that makes no sense. For example, we see the agents talk about how the Iguana was the hitman, and they believe this was all a setup to get to their wit sec mob boss. However, we actually hear the conversation the hitman is having with the person who hired him, which just tells him to find a patsy to take the fall. He didn’t know the FBI would be there, and didn’t plan on using Alex, so how could he possibly have masterminded using Alex to get to Charlie to get her to take him to his apparent actual victim? That makes no sense. I’m concerned about the direction of the next episode. I’ve only not liked one episode so far this season, and this is really only half an episode. The audio description, however, remains solid, and does exactly what a mystery show should do.
