The Too Much TV Roundup- 04/30/23

Good news for fans of The morning Show. Apple Plus has already picked that show up for a fourth season before the third season even premieres.

11) The power (Amazon)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Honestly, I’m as surprised as you are. I was actually looking forward to this series. However, the pilot is very slow. I felt like I was watching a completely different show than the one the trailers had been hyping. it reminded me of how I used to feel when i was hyped for the latest theatrical adaptation of a hot YA title, only for it to fall flat, and have totally missed the point of the book. A little like The Mortal Instruments, or Divergent sequels. I’m confused and underwhelmed. Most people’ aren’t critics, and don’t feel beholden to giving a second episode as much as possible. The general rule is that the pilot needs to be amazing, and for a few other shows I started today, that was true. I was so incredibly bored here.

10) Doogie Kamaloha MD (Disney Plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

It’s the sole surviving Disney show that isn’t Marvel or Star Wars at this point. I would have preferred Big Shot to be that show, or The mighty Ducks, but we’ve got this. I think, my biggest problem with the second season premiere was how much time it spent away from our title doctor, and how much time was spent on the old car breaking down. Also, based on what I remember about the finale, if her mom has only been the Chief for a week (which is a line dropped in the episode), then surfer boy hasn’t been in Australia that long. Just saying.

9) Up Here (hulu)

English Audio Description?: Yes

I was less of a fan of the music in the second episode. It’s an odd duck of a show, and I’m not really feeling these characters as much as I was last week. I think last week i was so excited to see another musical format show, but this week really made me wonder if it was possible to love all musical format shows.

8) Anamaniacs (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Following some really strong episodes, I thought this was just kind of average. Even Pinky and the Brain’s storyline, about having an AI companion wasn’t anywhere near the Groundhog Day inspired two-parter that just happened.

7) The Night Agent (Netflix)

English Audio description?: yes

Bold choices. They probably worked for some people, but I found them to be a bit distancing in the long run. We do get dropped into this show, and the exposition isn’t that heavy, but thrown at you in bits. It takes off running before you really even know what it is, or who to care about. The opening sequence was action packed, but I didn’t know who I was supposed to care about in the long term, or understand how this would impact the show. As the show moves on, i appreciated that the show wanted to move at a brisk pace, but it did so with poorly established characters, and with only a sprinkle of an explanation as to what is going on. I’m sticking around, because by the end, it proves to be worth my time, but I still struggle to connect with these characters, because the series didn’t bother to get me invested.

6) Great Expectations (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: Yes

This BBC limited series import keeps its MVP for the final moments. Olivia Coleman is almost a teaser of what’s to come. The first episode really centers on a young actor that I’m certain could have been recast, playing our lead pip. The actors around him, fine. Mag witch was great. The show had a moment of inconsistency when Sarah is trying to scare pip by whipping her cane against a solid wood object hard, like she’s threatening to beat him with it next. The cane feels sturdy. it’s being smacked hard against a solid object. A few scenes later, Sarah easily breaks this same object over her leg. Strong enough to withstand being smacked against a solid wood piece of furniture, but defeated by the incredible strength of a malnourished 32 year old housewife.

5) UnPrisoned (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Mostly, I’m very much here for this Kerry Washington/Delroy Lindo comedy, even if it is a bit messy. But I’d really love to know what Washington’s career is. Right now, i think she’s just an influencer. Does she have a job? What is it?

4) My Kind Of Country (Apple Plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Reese Witherspoon is producing this reality show where country singers give performers not in the typical Nashville lifestyle or country look a shot at their country dreams. The first episode has Jimmy Allen agonizing over four artists. I know who I would have cut, but he made a different choice. That’s fair.

3) The Golden Girls (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: No

not all classic episodes end up ranked lower. This Golden Girls classic featured Jerry orbach as an old flame of Dorothy’s, and even though I felt like I had seen this episode before, it was close enough to the end of this season (the final one), that I thought he might actually stick around.

2) Boy Meets World (Disney plus)

English Audio Description?: No

Another classic episode. Essentially, this was the episode that introduced us to the friendship between Shawn and Topanga and Cory. Cory tries to straighten his hair, and that doesn’t work out, and he’s also paired with Topanga on a school project. There’s that hint of that classic relationship we all fell in love with blossoming here. Meanwhile, the show gave Shawn a sister (never seen, just mentioned). Pretty sure she never comes up again from what I remember of Shawn’s character arc.

1) Rabbit hole (Paramount plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Loved this. It did everything right. It introduced us to our lead character, we got an idea of who he is, what he does, and where the show is headed. It’s also a bit of a mindfuck, which I love. i love a show that demands my attention, and I never even look at my phone. I never feel compelled to do anything else except try and figure out how to get this all figured out. It’s a smart, fast paced thrill ride, perfect for Kiefer Sutherland.
