The Too Much TV Roundup- 05/17/23

Netflix has attempted its first upfront presentation, and to celebrate, they brought what they assumed were good tidings. Ginny and Georgia got a two season renewal, because certainly the world needed more of that. And, Virgin River got an early Season 6 renewal before Season 5 premieres. Also, Apple Plus announced that the upcoming third season of physical will be its last.

10) American idol (ABC/Hulu)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Renewed

This Road To The Finale clip show was mostly a waste of time. It did feature some new footage, and checked in on a handful of earlier eliminations. But, when it comes time to celebrate those winners, there seems to be a certain winnner American idol has decided to refuse to acknowledge their existence. And really, it’s been pretty noticeable since she won, as the only black female winner since the reboot. In general for a show in its 21st season, that has produced more than just the heavily advertised alumni like Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, and Adam Lambert, the bench is a lot deeper than even the show is willing to give itself credit for. Instead of this episode for people with short term memory loss, why not do a where are they now, and tout as many people who went on to do successful projects, like Todrick hall, Danny Noriega, Haley Reinhardt, Tori Kelly, Alan Ritchson, Colton Swon, Kellie Pickler, and Fantasia Barrino (who is barreling fast toward an Oscar nomination this year). Remind the world of just how important this franchise has been, and maybe then people will start paying more attention to the new crop of kids.

Episode Grade: C+

9) Designing Women (hulu)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

Points deducted for making me feel old. I remember watching this show back as a kid, and I had no idea these women were supposed to be as young as they are. Then this episode centers around Delta Burke’s character’s birthday, turning 30, which is so much younger than me now, and I felt so old. but that monologue about the night the lights went out in Georgia was fire.

8) Florida Man (Netflix)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Limited Series

There are times where I think the show is focused more on that “meanwhile in Florida” that we seem to show off in the news. Like something crazy is happening, and it’s always happening here. So it’s this heightened version of Florida meant for people in the other 49 states to laugh at. It doesn’t feel like anyone who actually lives here is on the writing team.Sometimes, the show is bogged down by the gimmick, the jokes, and the plot does quite get the room it needs to grow.

7) Doogie Kamaloha MD (Disney Plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: not yet renewed

Well, the doctor is having a strained relationship now with her increasing in popularity surfer boyfriend, and while she gets to be in charge of her first shift, she also spends most of the time trying to recreate that Denny/Grey’s Anatomy relationship. Don’t get me wrong, it worked like gang busters for them. Will it work on a Disney plus show? Also, Kai finally figures out he has feelings for someone a little too late.

Episode Grade: B

6) Top Chef (Bravo/Peacock)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Presumably Renewed

This episode was filmed around the time of the Queen’s death, and therefore they couldn’t really leave the top Chef kitchen. I agreed with the elimination when the question was asked “was there any element of the dish that blew us away?”, because while the other two in the bottom made some pretty big errors, they at least had one element that came together. Here, the one sent home apparently made nothing that was ay good.

Episode Grade: B+

5) 911 Lone Star (FOX/hulu)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Renewed

This show really needed audio description this week. This should be on top, but I have to take away points for the most pivotal moment being confusing as fuck without audio description. The loss of a rather major recurring character, rather suddenly, in a scene that begged for audio description reminded me that this deal Hulu has with FOX is bullshit. A great episode that touched on a lot of solid topics was ruined slightly by being unintelligible.

Episode Grade: A-

4) Jeopardy Massters (ABC/Hulu)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Not Yet Renewed

It’s hard to cheer for the episode where Sam clearly can no longer save himself from being eliminated. He’s a nice guy, but can’t accumulate enough match points to stay in the game. Also, ABC couldn’t get that AD on there.

Episode Grade: A-

3) Home Improvement (ABC/Hulu)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

In Taps, Jill passes on a last minute trip from her parents by pretending to be sick, and then finds out that her dad died shortly after. In a more serious episode, Tim Allen and Patricia Richardson had the rare opportunity to do some more dramatic work, and it was nice.

Episode Grade: A-

2) Everwood (FreeVee)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

Nina’s pregnancy is center stage as the small town debates surrogacy and whether or not we should be playing God. mind you, this show premiered in like 2003, so it doesn’t have the excuse of being generationally different. But, this odd walk back through time still ended up being a nice episode for the Brown family, as Andy got to offer the better perspective, Ephram and Amy had a productive fight, and Delia befriended a bully.

Episode Grade: A-

1) Ted Lasso (Apple Plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Final Season

Things are starting to fall into place. Hannah Waddingham really had some great moments throughout the episode, but Juno Temple and Brett Goldstein stole this episode. Honestly, Ted was barely in it. This allowed the cast around him to further all of their plots, getting them a bit more in line with their futures for what seems like an increasingly obvious finale. Even characters like Sam and Nathan still had impactful things happen to them this episode. It was a long one, but it really balanced the ensemble quite well.
