The Too Much TV Roundup- 06/25/23

I happened to stumble on a show I’ve been checking semi-frequently on audio description, and I found out that Yellowjackets (Season 1) now has AD. this was a show I had started, but didn’t finish. I’m starting over on it. See where it landed in the rankings below.

13) The Family Stallone (Paramount Plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Renewed

If Sly wasn’t in this, I wouldn’t watch it. There was one with some of the members of Clint Eastwood’s family a while back, and i didn’t care, because the main reason wasn’t in it. Here, this is supposedly a real look at sly’s life. Special cameo from Dolph Lundgren. This was never going to top my list, as shows of this format are typically not my thing. But, again, Stallone.

Episode Grade: C+

12) Fubar (Netflix)

I’ve been a huge fan of Arnie’s for years, and I’m aware that Stallone and Schwarzenegger are in my two lowest rated shows, but Fubar is kinda shitty. I mean, I don’t know what he saw in this script. Money? Was every page printed on cash? But, he’s also got one of the hottest rising stars in Monica Barberau (Top Gun Maverick), who I think has big things ahead of her. I won’t be able to quit this show, but I would never recommend it either.

Episode Grade: C+

11) Nora From Queens (MAX)

English Audio Description?: no

Status: Renewed?

Hot take: The grandmother on the show is funnier than Aquafina. Also, disappointed at the lack of audio description.

Episode Grade: B-

10) American Born Chinese (Disney plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Not Yet Renewed

A solid cast, and a really bizarre plot. I don’t think this starting grade will be where this show lives, but I do need to marinate on it more. It had a lot to accomplish in a half hour, introducing us to a cast, but also this whole other mystical element within the show. There was a part of the audio description where I think we got the literal translation, and it wasn’t smoothed out so it sounded like how people actually speak. It was when his parents were fighting, and it sounded like not real sentence structure. The jury requires more episodes.

Episode Grade: B-

9) Young Sheldon (MAX)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: renewed

Sheldon has to help his brother study so he doesn’t get kicked off football, but when he finds out his brother cheated, it throws his whole world into total chaos.

Episode Grade: B

8) The Good Wife (Paramount plus)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

I actually never watched the original, but fell in love with The Good Fight. With CBS launching the second spinoff next season, I felt maybe it was time to see what all the fuss was about. The case was interesting, but going from Good Fight to Good Wife is jarring. i thought Wife was a little slower, and Alicia Florick needs to pound Red Bulls.

Episode Grade: B

7) 8 Simple rules (Disney Plus)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

Sadly, the only Christmas episode this show got with john Ritter. At least it ended in a way that was perfect for every character, and Paul says it was his best Christmas ever. Side note: was that Katey Sagal actually singing? Can she sing? That was pretty good.

Episode Grade: B+

6) Doug (Paramount Plus)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

This episode had two parts so iconic I remembered both from my childhood. One involved Doug joining this shows version of the scouts, and finding a friendly and well trained snake, and taking the high road with Roger. The second introduced us to The Beets, and Killer Tofu. Skeeter and Doug are supposed to go to a concert, but Skeeter gets grounded, and it turns out everything works out for the better when the tour bus swings past Skeeter’s house.

Episode Grade: A-

5) Grace and Frankie (Netflix)

English Audio Description?: Yes

I pulled an episode out of this for my Mom’s birthday, and it didn’t feature either of the guys. Instead, all the kids popped up, plus Grace, Frankie, and Joan Margaret. Frankie was worried Coyote was going to fall off the wagon, but a good conversation between Grace and Coyote help Grace realize she too has a problem.

Episode Grade: A-

4) Justified (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Revived

Raylon has to protect a judge, and i could have used some audio description in this episode. I’m pretty sure that judge was played by Stephen Root. Meanwhile, Boyd blows up a meth lab.

Episode Grade: A-

Yellowjackets (Showtime)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Renewed

The pilot episode now with audio description makes all the difference. I can understand it better. I just thought two other shows had better episodes, and the time jumping isn’t the most blind friendly experience, but I’m sure as the series rolls and I start figuring everyone out, it will make more sense.

Episode Grade: A-

2) The Great (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Renewed?

Katherine tries to outlaw murder, but finds it rather an unpopular decision. At least every town gets a monkey instead? Peter spends most of the episode struggling with whether or not to murder someone he swore to kill a long time ago, and also get two horses to have sex.

Episode Grade: A

1) The marvelous Ms maisel (Amazon)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Final Season

midge finally gets a break, but even though she killed it, they don’t want her. Men don’t want her. In the future, she is also trying to build up her mom’s matchmaking business (even if it is a money pit). And her dad goes on a big thing about the first son in his bloodline always being the smart one, until he finds out Ethan is not a prodigy. but Esther might be. This episode won the day for Rachel Brosnahan’s Emmy moment, where she closes herself in the bathroom and just cries. Maybe she’ll take the Danny Stevens gig after all.
