The Too Much TV Roundup- 09/20/23

Totes forgot to mention, perhaps because it doesn’t have audio description and I stopped watching it, that Dark Winds was renewed for a third season. So, any lingering fans out there, you may celebrate.

11) Adventure Time (MAX)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

Finn tries to convince a tree trunk to have an adventure. I love that these episodes are so short.

Episode Grade: B

10) Futurama (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Revival Now Running

in the season 3 premiere, Bender is affected by a were-car, which of course takes the gang on a strange journey. rarely do I ever get through an episode without wishing this had audio description, no matter how solid the episode. There seems to be a need for lots of sight gags, and without sight, I feel like I’m missing out.

Episode Grade: B

9) Clarissa Explains It All (Paramount Plus)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

Clarissa’s mom realizes she knows nothing about her daughter, and starts to immerse herself in Clarissa’s life. These were simpler times. There’s a reference here to Clarissa and Sam going to a Nirvana concert, and Clarissa remarking on how she may never get to see them again. Apparently, Clarissa is a prophet.

Episode Grade: B

8) Name That Tune (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Not Yet Renewed

I always feel like a boss guessing the song before the celebrity. The season premiere had two great runs. It’s a pretty simple show.

Episode Grade: B

7) Ahsoka (Disney Plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Limited?

Space Whales! But, spoilers, the Hayden Christensen stuff went on for too long. He was never really this nice either, always kind of an entitled brat. Lowest grade of the season. The Darth Vader appearance worked well in obi Wan, it feels out of place here.

Episode Grade: B

6) Dinosaurs (Disney Plus)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

I’m pretty sure this was an allegory for the Vietnam War. Either way, I thought it was well crafted, and the showrunners had enough to say that this is part 1 of 2.

Episode Grade: B+

5) Special Ops: Lioness (Paramount Plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Not Yet Renewed

In the penultimate hour, Cruz battles her own feelings as she struggles to do her job, versus actually having feelings for this girl she’s using to get close to her dad.

Episode Grade: B+

4) Heartstopper (Netflix)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Not Yet renewed

Charlie’s a bit too nice to his parents, who are slightly draconian and out of touch in their punishment threats. It takes me out of a series when the parents get away with dumb shit. 99% of the rest of the population would have at least had an argument, but Charlie is just accepting of whatever his parents shit on him. Otherwise, good episode, and nice scenes with Nick’s brother. Also, Olivia Coleman!

Episode Grade: A-

3) Killing It (Peacock)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Not Yet renewed

It looks like every episode we will get a character too dumb to function, that I have to accept can somehow perform their job. Here, the main duo interact with a police officer who thinks 50 people are murdered in Miami like every five seconds.Episode Grade: A-

Episode Grade: A-

2) Fleabag (Amazon)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Ended

Really glad I decided to get caught up with Fleabag. This is one of those really unique well written shows. Very off color, but hilarious.

Episode Grade: A

1) The Bear (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Not Yet Renewed

After making it all the way through Season 2, I do not understand how this is a comedy. This is one of the strongest dramas I’ve watched this year, with some terrific performances. The season finale did not disappoint. Season 2 totally turned Ritchie around for me, and Jamie Lee Curtis was fantastic in her minimal screen time. Seriously, there are shows that are actually funny, and the Bear should be running in Drama. What is it afraid of?

Episode Grade: A+, Season 2 Grade: A
