The Too Much TV Roundup- July 19th

Yesterday was very weird. None of my punctuation marks were where they were supposed to be, and it was driving me insane. Today, everything is normal. I don’t know, nor do I claim to understand when the Matrix falls apart like that. Back in my seeing days, I had a bit more patience for random bullshit, but now, my tolerance for such nonsense is low.

Here’s the rankings for today.

1) Breeders (FX/Hulu)

English Audio Description Available?: No

In Episode 6, I got the distinct feeling that we are not headed for a good place in the season finale. The first season ended with Luke in the hospital, the second with Mark kicked out of the house, and the third seems headed for something to be sure. Finally, there was this massive clash in the family when mom couldn’t get her shit together to get Ava to this concert, meanwhile dad is off firing people at work, taking his own mother to see her friend before she dies, and trying to figure out Luke’s problem with his former best friend. Someone doesn’t like being the bad guy this season, and puts it all right back on the one person who has made the most emotional growth in Season 3. I still don’t know why people aren’t watching this, or nominating it. It’s hands down better than a lot of the shows we do watch and nominate.

Episode Grade: A

2) Night Sky (Amazon)

English Audio Description Available?: Yes

I gotta say, Everytime we cut away to someone who is not part of the main storyline, like the group currently driving across country, I hate it. The rest of the show, the stuff happening at the house between this long time married couple, Jude, their grand-daughter, and even the neighbor… all of that, is compelling. I like knowing that the mystery is bigger than them, but spending too much time on those fringe storylines hasn’t paid off yet, and since this was already cancelled, it may never.

Episode Grade: A-

3) The Marvelous Ms Maisel (Amazon)

English Audio Description Available?: Yes

Aside from just some great acting from Jane lynch and Rachel Brosnahan, this episode was a bit of a mixed bag. Lenny woke up in Midge’s apartment, and was less than happy about it, seemingly wanting to be left sleeping on the streets. Meanwhile, I reminded myself that Midge has a sibling that seems to currently be visiting Ritchie Cunningham’s brother. Missing cast member alert? And the ending of this episode, while fun, just went to show that Midge was right, and all of Sophie’s bravado was bullshit. None of that ever needed to happen. She promised to leave her alone, and she couldn’t even do that for one day.

Episode Grade: A-

4) Heartstopper (Netflix)

English Audio Description Available?: Yes

OK. Third episode. It’s kicking in. I’m getting invested. It took a minute, but all the interaction between these characters really starts to pay off in the third episode, especially with the growth of Nick. I’m starting to climb on board.

Episode Grade: B+

5) DB Cooper: Where Are You? (Netflix)

English Audio Description Available?: Yes

Part two of this docuseries focused heavily on this one guy they believed was Cooper, and all the stuff around him. It was in this episode I realized… they’re stretching for time. This would make for a better movie than docuseries. Realizing that there are more episodes beyond this… I’m not sure I care enough to keep finding out.

Episode Grade: B-

6) Resident Evil (Netflix)

English Audio Description: Yes

In the second episode of this god forsaken adaptation, turns out that Billie is still alive for now, FOR NOW, and we are all trying to deal with that. Lance Reddick is still the boss. Jade is a bad luck charm. Get close to her, and something bad will happen. This episode was slightly less shitty than the first, and with all the timeline jumps, it managed it better. This is not great TV, and I predict it has less than a month before cancellation, but I’ll watch another episode. I don’t know why, other than the franchise name.

Episode Grade: C-
