The Too Much TV Roundup- 05/21/23

American idol crowned a winner last night. I’m watching it today. I know who won, and thank God.

15) Drops Of God (Apple Plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Unknown

This was an odd duck of a series.I’m not even really sure I understand what the show is about. There was a lot of focus on being able to taste really specific flavors immediately, and perhaps becoming a sommelier. But, I think of the new shows I watched, I enjoyed this one the least. It didn’t really establish to me what it wanted to be, and instead tried almost an avant-garde approach to a pilot. We’re living in a peak TV world, and there’s no reason to stay attached to everything.

Episode Grade: C

14) Dinosaurs (Disney Plus)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

Why does Robbie, who is not a wolf, or a werewolf, need to howl at the moon as a rite of passage? Like, make it make sense.

Episode Grade: C+

13) Designing Women (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: no

Status: Ended

I feel like this show is still finding its groove. These women didn’t immediately click as well as The Golden Girls, even if they seemed heir apparent. The third episode tries to balance everyone, and I didn’t get a clear message as to what this was really about.

Episode Grade: C+

12) The Adventures of The Gummi Bears (Disney plus)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

you can tell I’m having my mid-life crisis through watching these old shows, can’t you? I mean, as an adult, things are silly, but the first part featured the Gummi’s being turned into statues, and the second introduced us to their underground cave system they use to travel. And Gavin is still here, even if I don’t remember him.

Episode Grade: B-

11) Fired On mars (HBo MAX)

English Audio Description?: Yes

I think I wanted this to be funnier, or expected it to be, but it has a solid voice cast led by Luke Wilson, and an interesting enough premise that I’ll come back for another episode.

Episode Grade: B-

10) Rabbot Hole (Paramount Plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Not Yet Renewed

I feel like, compared to the first three episodes, the fourth dialed it way back, and also… I’m starting to see some cracks in the acting performances. We seemed to have cut some corners. When there isn’t something utterly insane happening every five minutes, and these characters have to just emote, it feels like Kiefer Sutherland got pulled into some truly terrible daytime soap. Hopefully, Season 2 can get a recast. Keep Kiefer, fire everyone else.

Episode Grade: B

9) Love and Death (HBo MAX)

English Audio Description?: yes

Status: Limited Series

For me, this is the only episode I need to watch. it’s really only been a year since Jessica Biel played Candy, and i don’t have any desire to watch a second limited series about these peoples lives, even if I do love Elizabeth Olsen. I’m not sure this really is doing anything radically different or fresh that makes me excited, but it’s not bad. Perhaps, if you never saw Hulu’s Candy, this might be a good time waster for you.

Episode Grade: B

7) Home Improvement (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: no

Status: Ended

In the Season 6 finale, Randy has a date, and Pamela Anderson’s Lisa doing a cameo causes Heidi to quit. Perhaps she saw Barb Wire.

Episode Grade: B

6) 911 (FOX/Hulu)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: moving To ABC

Hen caught her ex in an overdose and got her back in jail, and it turned out her son’s biological father doesn’t want custody, but to just be a part of his kids life somehow. The gang encountered a protest at a funeral, with a racist who didn’t want medical attention from non-white people, and Maddie had to report a fellow employee who kept hanging up on callers, and later had to save her life.

Episode Grade: B+

5) Cheers (Paramount Plus)

English Audio Description?: no

Status: Ended

How Sam got out of his predicament at the top of the episode was pure Gold, but the rest of the episode was a special night for Cliff, who had to balance his two dates in the weirdest possible way. But that’s Cliff. The one-liner’s here were solid throughout.

Episode Grade: A-

4) The Last Thing he Told Me (Apple Plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Jennifer Garner is still trying to keep her life from unraveling as she seems to realize everything she knows might be a lie. Austin, TX becomes a major factor here, and she might just be headed there for some answers.

Episode Grade: A-

3) young Sheldon (HBo MAX)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Renewed

Sheldon needs to make friends. So he reads a book about doing so, which was pretty hilarious. but I’ve ranked this so high, because by the time he has a friend, it’s this Vietnamese kid with a backstory that is tragic, but perfectly hilarious when inputted into this situation.

Episode Grade: A-

2) Sweet Tooth (Netflix)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Renewed For A Final season

Unlike Shadow and Bone where I felt like jumping into Season 2 was a challenge, I think the way this Season 2 opener was structured was perfection. Not only did I grow to care for a room full of hybrids, but it advanced the plot in a way that also made me remember where we last left off. It worked perfectly, and i love this show.

Episode Grade: A

1) The Marvelous ms Maisel (Amazon)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Final Season

I think this show goes from perfect moment to perfect moment. Whether it was Abe’s reaction to having a hand on his thigh, which led to an awkward and frank conversation with a co-worker, and then later dinner with his wife and the validation that “It is after seven.” Or Midge’s mother trying to get her CIA son to do a hit on the other matchmakers she’s pretty sure burned down her tea room. Or just the really awful first day Midge had at work, and the killer callback she had by using her failed joke in her own standup routine and knocking it out of the park. It’s all these little moments that made this the best thing I saw and a reminder of how much i will miss this show.
