The Too Much TV Roundup- 07/05/23

By the way, there’s never been a better time to catch up on a show. If there’s something you didn’t watch initially, and were worried you’d never catch up on, the writers strike and possible actors strike will mean a lot of shows that would have returned in September, won’t be.

13) The Family Stallone (Paramount Plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Renewed

It’s just not my type of show. Even with Sly in it. I just don’t get this brand of programming. So, while I’m not mad at this show, I’ll be freeing up a slot in my weekly lineup.

Episode Grade: C

12) George and Tammy (Paramount Plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Limited

It’s a show that quite honestly portrays George Jones in not a great light. it lets Shannon explore his volatile side, but I’m not sure that the story itself is compelling enough for people who aren’t fans of this duo. I’m fairly certain Jessica Chastain is doing her own singing, and I wish she tried to sound more like Tammy Wynette.

11) Doug (Paramount Plus)

English Audio Description?: no

Status: Ended

First episode so far I didn’t immediately remember. It was a pretty solid day for TV, otherwise it normally wouldn’t rank this low.

10) Justified (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Being Revived This month

Yeah, I thought the Season 2 opener was a bit scattershot. it didn’t do a great job of setting anything up. It introduces Margo Martindale, for a role i know she will eventually earn that Emmy, but she’s not doing much in her first outing. It was just an average season opener.

Episode Grade: B

9) Arnold (Netflix)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Limited

Well, if we are going to talk about the actor, let’s talk about the actor. A large chunk of the 2nd episode is devoted to his meeting Maria, falling in love, proposing, and getting married. He also covers his own family, how he owned property, and wasn’t a struggling actor because he was a millionaire when he was first starting out. There’s also time devoted to his heart surgery. Meanwhile, there are some films he never talks about, like predator, that just get lumped in. A lot of talk about his first couple films, then he focuses on the hits like Twins, T2, True lies, and the rest are mostly just mentions. he acts like his only flop once his career got started was Last Action Hero. They play footage from Collateral Damage, but don’t talk about how that film flopped in a post-9/11 world. I wanted more talk about his body of work, and he certainly doesn’t mention any of his later projects like Maggie, The Expendables, The Last Stand, Escape Plan, or Dark Fate. This was interesting, but I also wanted more.

8) Boy Meets World (Disney Plus)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

I enjoyed the sentiment in the episode where Cory gets a special gift from his dad for his birthday, but there’s literally NO mention of his birthday other than that. The younger you are, the more important your birthday is. This family is not poor, and there’s no way Cory got one gift. No cake. no mention of a party. Nobody brings it up at school. It’s the weirdest fucking thing. But, there’s a good heart in this story, even if they ignore kind of the biggest thing.

7) 911 (Hulu)

in the 2nd part of the tsunami episode, Buck frantically searched for Christopher, and i legit believed they had let that kid die. Meanwhile, Maddie has a kid with a drone check on a building.

6) Secret Invasion (Disney Plus)

English Audio Description?: yes

Status: Probably Limited

Nick continues to operate in a vacuum, believing that asking anyone for help just puts them in more danger. Yet, the world might also die. So, he thinks he can overthrow the Skrulls with just Talos. Also, another major shocking death!

Episode Grade: B+

5) Friends (MAX)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Ended

Janice asks the group how they all started, so we get a flashback to before the pilot. obviously, they became six when Rachel moved in, but how did they become five? This doesn’t do a great job of answering how Phoebe and Chandler came to be, but it does introduce Joey, and is fun to see Rachel in her high society mode, as well as what used to be where Central perk now is.

4) Frasier (Paramount Plus)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

The brothers plan a dinner party, but everything seems to be an uphill battle. And Niles would really like to help Daphne get a stain out of her dress.

3) Platonic (Apple Plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Unknown

I felt like they were pushing the cocaine a bit too hard on Rose Byrne’s Sylvia but maybe that’s the point. Maybe she needed to grow up, he was incapable of doing so, so she left him unconsciously knowing it would be good for her. Now, she’s a mom, and wants to relive her glory days, but does she? I’m hoping this show gets a second season, so we can continue to see growth as Rogen and Byrne play very well opposite each other.

Episode Grade: A-

2) Buffy The Vampire Slayer (hulu)

English Audio Description?: no

Status: Ended

Even without AD, this is still a big episode for the show. Buffy learns Angel is a vampire, we learn more about Angelus, and Darla is killed off. A lot happens.

1) The Diplomat (Netflix)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Renewed

it’s nice to see her catch up with me. I’ve long thought the PM was a tool, and she just finally made that connection, but a little too late. unfortunately, things got explosive. She probably should have just let Hal take that meeting. A surprising and ballsy way to end season 1. you gotta have a lot of faith in that second season renewal. If this had been one and done, people would have rioted.
