The Too Much TV Roundup- 07/09/23

What a disappointing day of TV.

13) The Crowded Room (Apple Plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Limited

So, the show is going to try and confuse you through poor direction and writing. Got it. If this turns out that he has a split personality disorder, and this is like identity, I’m calling it now. We open with a shooting, and then transition to Tom Holland sitting in an interrogation room, where he talks about his time in high school and buying weed. WHAT? Luckily, I love Holland, so I’ll give this one more episode, but that was an awful pilot.

12) Somewhere Boy (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: no

Status: Who Knows

Once again, following The Clearing which dropped without AD, Hulu has another “original” with no AD. They can’t even do the basic thing the other streamers do, and put audio description on their own shit. This show actually has good bones, but it’s hard to follow as it leaps from the present to the past and back. it’s also not dialogue heavy, and the subject matter is dark. I might try one more episode, I might not. Hulu likely won’t give this audio description for months, like they did with Wedding Season, but ratings for shows are based on a short window of time around the release. Handle your shit, Hulu. If I want to watch a series to help it get a second season, I have to do so when it drops. I can’t wait till December, because you’ve probably already cancelled it.

11) Based On A True Story (Peacock)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Limited

Kaley Cuoco and Chris Messina star in this misguided limited series that has a serial killer tuning around, and these two want to have a podcast featuring the killer (because they know who it is). I guess that’s a spoiler, but it just makes the show worse. It says a lot about the desire to be famous when instead of turning in the killer, you offer him a podcast.

10) And Just Like That (MAX)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: not Yet Renewed

OK. We overcorrected. There are now too many people in this cast. In an effort to try and diversify the shit out of Carrie Bradshaw’s life, there are now too many fucking people in this show. And I’m going to get real here. If this were me, I would drop Charlotte and Miranda back to recurring, and let Carrie explore the new friendships. I actually really like Che. Sara Ramirez brings new life. I don’t like them with Miranda. Carrie now has multiple gay male friends. She’s got an underdeveloped new friend/realtor. I forgot Carrie was even seeing anyone. And the one writing the book? I forgot she existed too. I don’t mind the reboot, but we need to reel it in.

9) Justified (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Returning Next Week

This show sucks without audio description sometimes. There are shootouts. I don’t know what’s happening there. Random smaller characters are harder to follow without AD, though there is a brilliant show here that I’m being kept at arms length from.

8) Home Improvement (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: no

Status: Ended

Tim is told by hill to go out and be Al’s wingman so Al will stop hanging around. It’s a weird episode, as Tim is trying to figure out why Jill wants to send him out to flirt with women, and Al is so over the top here. Too much.

7) The Lake (Amazon)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Not Yet Renewed

I feel like already from the set up of Season 2, it won’t match Season 1. I feel that in my bones. but, the cast is pleasant, and perhaps our gay couple can fix their relationship by the end of the season.

Episode Grade: B+

6) Frasier (Paramount Plus)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

An average Frasier episode where the brothers argue over an IQ test.

Episode Grade: B+

5) Mad Men (Free Vee)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Ended

The fact that pete is neither murdered during the run of the show, or turns out to be a serial killer was a huge misstep for Weiner. he’s gross and creepy, and actually keeping a box of Don’s things is a bridge too far.

4) Boy Meets World (Disney plus)

English Audio Description?: no

Status: Ended

Cory is given the role of Hamlet. He’d rather be in die hard. Meanwhile, his dad has a battle at work when everyone takes a pay cut.

3) The walking Dead (Netflix)

English Audio Description?: no (But I watched with a sighted person)

Status: Final Season

Some of the main cast has to rescue the other half of the main cast who are in different prison camps. Lauren Cohen has a great scene between her and a child zombie. Also, Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Seth Gilliam have standout moments.

Episode Grade: A-

2) The Good Wife (Paramount Plus)

English Audio Description?: no

Status: Spinoff Coming Soon

Might the wrong guy in a Bulls jersey been accused of murder? Perhaps. I can’t imagine sleeping on a bed used for conjugal visits in jail. Like, between that or a porn bed… I’m not sure which is worse. I’m already pretty sure every time I’m in a hotel room, sex has happened on that bed. But at least, it still has the allure of people just wanting to sleep.

1) Young Sheldon (MAX)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Renewed

It’s a slow news day, but Annie Potts as MeeMaw is a role that deserves some kind of recognition. She’s excellent in this germaphobe episode, and her reactions sell the whole thing.
