The Too Much TV Roundup- 07/30/23

It’s a slow news day, but you know how all the streaming services have these random films that didn’t do well at the box office, or were even theatrically released, and were made years ago? I wonder why we can’t have a streamer that does that just for TV shows? Think of how many shows you’ve seen over the years that had short runs, or perhaps aired years ago, and currently don’t appear on a streaming service, but it would be fun to revisit those shows. if I can revisit a crappy 90’s flop, I should be able to revisit a 90’s short lived tv show… on TV.

15) The Horror of Delores Roach (Amazon)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Not yet Renewed

I was surprised to find out this was a half hour comedy. Talk about not wasting time to establish the plot. I almost felt like this first episode was in some kind of marathon dash to complete the task of telling a story in a given period of time. There’s no real nuance, and we barely get to know what might be a main character. The show opens up with someone getting rave reviews about their show, based on this Delores Roach, and is haunted so quickly I don’t even remember that character’s name. Though, Delores is planning on setting the record straight. Am I supposed to know more about the writer? Because that character was not established at all. I’m holding out for future episodes, but this just wasn’t a successful pilot.

Episode Grade: C

14) Desperate Housewives (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

This really needs audio description. It has an in show narrator, but often what she has to say isn’t really that helpful for us blind and visually impaired. There’s also a huge ensemble here, and getting to know everyone quickly is challenging. I’m sticking with this for a while at least, but I have to acknowledge, that things don’t work without the AD. There was a joke here that I needed to know someone wasn’t wearing any pants, but that’s not in the description.

13) Home Improvement (hulu)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

The same day I catch up on this show, Zachary Ty Brian is charged with domestic violence again. I would love a reboot of this, but considering the problems with two of the three kids, it would have to feature Jonathan Taylor Thomas, who isn’t really trying to act anymore. This episode was a bit too Al for me. Someone gave him a Red Bull before this episode on him wanting to live in Tim’s rental property, and his performance was a bit much, even if I did agree with his character.

Episode Grade: B-

12) The Golden Girls (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Ended

I’m Sure this was progressive for its time period, but it’s funny to see an episode pushing the normalcy of gay characters, but doing it from the lens of this period, where somehow there still have to be a few jokes that didn’t age well. Plus, Blanche’s overreaction to her brother’s choice of bringing his partner, when she’ll literally have sex with anything that moves, feels a bit out of character for her. “I don’t mind that my brother is gay, I just don’t want him dating other men.” That’s a joke. Again, I’m sure this was subversive from its time, and maybe even some local affiliates chose not to air it. But…

11) Young Sheldon (MAX)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: renewed

Sheldon is being beaten up by a girl, and his parents are trying to handle it, but the girl’s parents really couldn’t care less.

Episode Grade: B

10) Doug (Paramount Plus)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

I remember the first part of this episode, with Doug going out to catch this fish with Mr Dink. The second part I had forgotten, where Doug and Skeeter accidentally break mr Dink’s grill. Two episodes with Dink? Also, Roger might be one of the great TV villains. he’s so representative of the stereotypical bully, I can’t find many case studies like him. If they did a reboot of Doug with the characters older, there’s no way Roger isn’t in jail.

Episode Grade: B

9) Friends (MAX)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Ended

Rachel finds a new job. Ross is selling the equivalent of Girl Scout cookies, which Monica has a bit of an addiction problem with. Also, it’s a Christmas episode, and phoebe is trying to save the dead Christmas trees that don’t sell.

Episode Grade: B+

8) Hijack (Apple Plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Not yet Renewed

A plane with idris Elba on it is Hijacked. We don’t learn a lot in the first episode, so my trepidation is can this sustain even a limited series? I think the stronger move would have been if the pilot was strong enough to not open that door, and the cliffhanger to the first episode was that the hijackers realized they were dealing with pilots willing to let people die. Let’s face it, hijacked planes usually crash into things anyway, either killing everyone on board, or more people. The smarter decision would be if the hijackers had to instantly modify their plan when they realized the pilots didn’t give a shit and realized what was more important.

Episode Grade: B+

7) Mad Men (???)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

Don is in a car accident with someone who is not his wife in the car. Peggy comes to his rescue, and we realize Don knows Peggy’s secret and now she knows his. Points deducted that pete is still on the show.

It gets a boost above normal for michael finding out something is medically wrong with him, and at Christmas time. His conversation with Bobby toward the end of the episode, was like him passing the torch almost, knowing that Bobby will take care of his kids just in case.

3) The Good Wife (Paramount Plus)

The firm is up against a troll commentator who harassed a woman into killing herself. This show started back in 2009, way before our current problems, but felt so timely.
