The Too Much TV Roundup- 08/22/23

MAX is sticking with And Just Like That, picking up the series for a third season. Also, Paramount Plus confirmed that the show is coming this fall, and will at least have a brief linear appearance on CBS.

12) X-Men (Disney Plus)

I hate seeing this show on the bottom, but narratively, they just got back from Genosha, and there was zero mention of Gambit. He never shows up to fight the episodes central villain Juggernaut, and instead we get Colossus, which is great. I love that big Ruskie. But, to act like Gambit doesn’t exist… on a show where you just reminded me that Beast has just been hanging out in jail this whole time, makes me wonder if this writers room actually would be able to handle all of these characters in a half hour. Plus, audio description would help the action sequences.

Betty’s father had a heart attack, so she and Don go to visit him. There was another subplot involving a corporate trip and another character getting to go, but without audio description, I’m having a really hard time keeping up with the characters that are not the leads.

10) 911 (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Moving To ABC

in “The Taking Of Dispatch 911”, I thought this was a creatively solid episode. It’s both shot with the typical tropes of a crime caper, mixed with the drama of a hostage situation. There’s a lot going on here that i would have loved to celebrate if it had audio description, but without it I wasn’t always sure what was happening. Plus, pretty much everyone in the dispatch who isn’t Jennifer Love Hewitt is recurring at best, so it was even harder to figure out who all these hostages even were. I don’t have facial recognition, so sometimes audio description just helps track the characters.

9) Minx (Starz)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Not Yet Renewed

In the third episode of the new season, i found myself really seeing the creative juices flowing, and wondering if this weird writers strike year could lead to a show like Minx finally getting emmy love next year. But from my standpoint, this is still a show where the visuals matter. not only is it a flashback in time, but they are literally talking about the visual aspect of these photo shoots, what the theme is, what the guy looks like, but their dialogue is written naturally, and not descriptive for my audience. Season 1 had audio description, and the only reason minx lost audio description was because it was picked up by Starz.

8) The Witcher (Netflix)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Renewed

S2E2 was just a little slow for my taste. I know they are world building, and setting up stuff for Yennifer and Garolt. i loved when Garolt handed Siri the wooden sword, but I couldn’t help but think this episode could have been a bit shorter just to feel tighter and not drawn out.

7) The Wonder Years (Hulu)

I totally forgot Lillian had a job.I feel like that’s the fault of the writers. There are constant reminders that her husband is a musician who also teaches at a university, but poor Lillian can go an entire episode with no mention that she has a job. I had truly forgotten. So when it became the major storyline, I was flabbergasted. Do you know what it’s like to be flabbergasted? I bet you don’t.

6) The Office (Peacock)

David Koechner guest stars as a boisterous personality. I love when Jim says he can do anything “except pass a breathalyzer test.” This was a funny episode with lots of one liners. It just doesn’t have audio description. It is the highest ranked show of this day without audio description though, so there’s that.

Episode Grade: B+

5) Chucky (Peacock)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Season 3 Drops In October

In the 2nd episode of the Series, Chucky is up to his old tricks, offing a character we just met, and torturing another. He’s got his eyes set on Lizzie, who is trying to convince her parents that Jake is the bully because she has no self awareness. After her triumphant stand to her parents, she goes to a Halloween party dressed as Jake’s dead dad. She has quickly risen to “character most likely to die” in just two episodes. And that says a lot, because this is a town full of garbage people.

4) Friends (MAX)

i loved when joey started to read Little Women. But, the real winner here was the reappearance of Richard, likely for just one episode. DAMMIT Monica! What are you doing with your life? Richard is literally perfect. I can’t believe she ends up with Chandler, who spent the entire episode pointing out to everyone but the actual guy, that he could see Phoebe’s new boyfriend’s penis hanging out of his shorts.

3) Full Circle (MAX)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Limited

Seeing this all coming together is interesting, but they also hold back a lot of details. Who knows what? What is going on? I think the success of the show will lie in the final episode, and the ability to tie everything together.

Still catching up on season 1. Adam is turning into a bit of a prick. Looks like that war is coming after all. He makes quite a switch in this episode.

Jones owned this episode. She used her superpower of explaining shit to bamboozle the Hero just before he defeats Cootie once again. Her narrative trip was excellent, and not only saved Cootie, but made the Hero cry. Jones, for the win!
