The Small Screen Diaries: The Weekly Rankings

I actually finished a lot of shows this week, which should free up a ton of space and shake up the list next week. Joining the list this week are Dexter Resurrection (Paramount Plus), Building The Band (Netflix), Back To The Frontier (HBo MAX), Foundation (Apple Plus), Sullivan’s Crossing (Netflix), and The Art detectives (Acorn). Also, I took a look at A Different World (Netflix) which has audio description!

WINNER: Squid Game (Netflix) with audio description- I’m not quite done with the final season, and I’ve basically lost all the new characters I was rooting for, yet something about this season still has me going. I am aware of a lot of spoilers, but I’m also just enjoying the ride. The audio description is really good, highlighting the horror of various situations, and the violent deaths of the remaining.

RUNNER UP: From (MGM Plus) with audio description- inching closer to the season two finale, and the mystery continues. If you love your twisty science fiction/horror series that are steeped in lore, and have a really strong ensemble, you can’t miss with From. The audio description is pretty good too, though Season 1 was just a little better.

#3- the Bear (Hulu) with audio description- Done. Chef’s kiss. A really nice season, with a resonant finale that sets up the beginning of the end, but not yet the actual end. I mentioned before that with the popularity of the cast, and the gigs they are being offered, it is getting harder and harder to align these schedules. While it hasn’t been announced, Season 5 as the last would not surprise me in the least. I think Jeremy Alan White is getting an Oscar nomination this year, and Ayo Edebiri has a really good shot. they don’t really need this anymore, and it certainly isn’t a comedy. It does have some really robust audio description, which takes advantage of the shows thoughtful direction, and use of silence.

#4- The Pitt (MAX) with audio description- Last episode I watched ended with the hint at a mass shooting, which is likely going to cause chaos to an already packed ER, and overworked doctors. With any luck, some new doctors and nurses will join in Seasonn 2 (especially since at least one cast member has been confirmed as not returning). this show just got nominated for an ACB award for excellence in Audio Description for TV. While I don’t think it would have been in my Top 5, I also don’t hate the nomination. It does have some really nice moments and bright spots, and makes sense. Ultimately, the nomination is a mix of quality and audience.

#5- Poker Face (Peacock) with audio description- I’ve been a huge fan since day one. I love how TV has given Natasha Lyonne these opportunities to flourish through Russian Doll, and now Poker Face. Plus, the format here allows for a lot of great guest performances, and the audio description is really good. I’m not intentionally frontloading the same narrator, but Roy seems to land high profile, critically acclaimed shows. And, the audio description ain’t bad.

#6- Mindhunter (Netflix) with audio description- I’m still loving this David Fincher historical trip back through the creation of profiling. The acting is great, and every episode is enticing. The audio description comes across as somewhat lethargic at times. It might even be mixed a tad too quiet.

#7- Breaking Bad (Netflix) with audio description- It was time to bump this up a bit.I’m still in Season 1, but the performances here are great, and the show has some really nice audio description if you’ve never watched.

#8- Last Week Tonight (HBO MAX) no audio description- As always, the highest rated show without audio description.

#9- The office (Peacock) no audio description- The Paper officially is launching in September, and while it is a spiritual sequel to The office, it features only one returning cast member, and I’m not even sure he’s a series regular. But, I’ll keep slowly catching up.

#10- Bet (Netflix) with audio description- Done. I do not expect a renewal, but I love being pleasantly surprised.

#11- Black Mirror (Netflix) with audio description- I didn’t drop it after one bump in the road (Play test), but after another (Shut Up And Dance), I had to take some ranks away. Season 3 seems to be a struggle for this show.

#12- Smoke (Apple Plus) with audio description- I’m excited for the future of this series, which so far has delivered an interesting story, and excellent performances, backed by a pretty strong audio description track.

#13- The Sandman (Netflix) with audio description- Some interesting ideas, and this show has the potential to rise more. It feels a little stuck right now after the first three episodes, but I’m still liking what it is doing. i feel like it has another gear. i do like the audio description, which has some fantastic moments, and Gwendolyn Christie has been a stand out so far.

#14- Stick (Apple Plus) with audio description- Santi is a pain in the ass, but I still like this ensemble, and Apple would be crazy not to renew this. it is Golf’s version of Ted Lasso, and Owen Wilson’s character has so much potential due to his backstory.

#15- MurderBot (Apple Plus) with audio description- Done. Just got renewed. The season finale is really responsible, and didn’t leave on a cliffhanger. There can easily be a second season, but it also satisfies the viewer just in case. Please try to do some better audio description in season 2. For a science fiction series, i thought it was weak more often than not.

#16- Adults (Hulu) with audio description- It is giving me Happy Endings vibes, and that is a good thing. I loved that show.

#17- The Daily Show (Paramount Plus) no audio description- I only watched one episode last week. But, it was a good one.

#18- Pop Culture Jeopardy (Amazon) with audio description- I’m now 25 episodes in. Damn. this is the gift that keeps giving.

#19- Silicon Valley (HBO MAX) with audio description- Finifhsed season 2, and on my way into Season 3.

#20- Scrubs (Peacock) no audio description- Donald Faison and Sarah Chalke officially signed to join Zach Braff, and it was enough for ABC to give the reboot a straight to series order. Likely, mid season. At worst, they’ll hold it for next fall.

#21- Euphoria (HBO MAX) with audio description- If you don’t know my history, I basically tried this once, and bailed after the pilot. Every episode since has been better than the pilot so far. the audio description is pretty good. Zendaya gets a lot of credit, but I love Hunter Schafer in this too.

#22- The Waterfront (Netflix) with audio description- Netflix’s new crime drama is making a mark every week out, with some odd violent death. it isn’t afraid to bump offf a character, and Topher Grace makes for an oddly chilling villain.

#23- Building The Band (Netflix) with audio description- Man, they are really trying with this audio description. Character intros are sometimes hard to do, so they have to wait until they can, and we do actually get some physical description after we’ve met someone, when finally able. Everyone can sing. I’m just two episodes in.

#24- Dexter Resurrection (Paramount Plus) with audio description- It kind of accepts what it is, as a sequel and revival. It jumps off from New Blood, but also ropes back in surviving Dexter cast members. The pilot begins with dexter having a conversation with a very familiar voice, and his best foe ever.

#25- The Better sister (Amazon) with audio description- Done. The finale did more than I initially expected, though isn’t some grand Shyamalan twist that is impossible to see coming. Strong performances kept this afloat, but the back half is better than the front half.

#26- And Just Like That (HBO MAX) with audio description- Man, Carrie really hits a reality check this week doesn’t she? I mean, she clearly has chemistry with Duncan, and I guess they are pairing Adam with Seema. Time to rip off the band aid, and dump the dead weight, Carrie.

#27- The Buccaneers (Apple Plus) with audio description- Its charm has grown on me. Little by little. it is fluffy, but nothing wrong with that. Almost done with Season 1, then on to the current season.

#28- All of Us Strangers (Netflix) with audio description- Only two episodes in. A crazy show killing off its cast at a rapid pace. I barely know these kids, and only a handful are still alive. I would say, since I’ve been hard on we Were Liars, that the voice chosen (TTS) is a bit optimistic considering the bleakness and horror of the situation. Just saying.

#29- Nine Perfect Strangers (Hulu) with audio description- Done. sacrificed strong supporting cast for a bizarre backstory for Nicole Kidman and Mark Strong, though I would argue the stars were Murray Bartlett, Christine Baranski, and Dolly Deleon.

#30- Dexter (Paramount Plus) with audio description- I know it seems weird to have the original below the revival, but right now I’m dealing with Lumen. I suppose… give it time? The audio description here is pretty consistently good.

#31- Drag Race All Stars (Paramount Plus) with audio description- 2 episodes left in the season, and i truly don’t know how this finale is going to work. Ginger for the win though.

#32- Yellowstone (Peacock) with audio description- I bumped it up. it had a nice finale, not a perfect one, and the second half of season 5 is uneven. Some of it was OK, but none was operating at the moments that made this such a huge hit. However, there are two spinoffs coming. So, we shall see what the future of the Dutton family has in store.

#33- Motorheads (Amazon) with audio description- Done. i wonder if Amazo will keep this around. We Were Liars is performing better, but I prefer Motorheads. is there room enough for both as the Summer I Turned Pretty enters its final season?

#34- The Great North (Hulu) no audio description- A little block of Animation Domination shows. This is the highest.

#35- Futurama (Hulu) no audio description yet- And the second highest.

#36- King Of The Hill (Hulu) no audio description- and lastly. this one has new episodes coming in August.

#37- Foundation (Apple Plus) with audio description- The show that makes me feel inadequate. I always have to laser focus on this show. It feels like elevated science fiction, and thank God the audio description is competently done.

#38- Patience (PBS) with audio description- I’m enjoying this little British mystery. it’s clever, and I could see American’s remaking this and throwing it on network TV.

#39- Bosch: Legacy (Amazon) with audio description- What a weak finale. But, Ballard starts, and it will be on this list somewhere next week. Did not love this finale though.

#40- Ginny and Georgia (Netflix) with audio description- now I’m embarking into Season 2. I caught a little audio description error in the first episode. Georgia is really unlikable, especially right now, all things considered.

#41- revival (Peacock) with audio description- Not great audio description. It is a SyFy series, so it is campy. It has potential it seems to squander, but the horror elements are great for fans of that stuff.

#42- Invasion (Apple Plus) with audio description- It is a little slow getting going. It has action set pieces, but it also sits and runs out the clock a lot. the audio description seems fine. No complaints so far.

#43- We Were Liars (Amazon) with audio description- Man, the voice. Not to beat a dead horse, but if we were, the narrator would describe it as cheerfully as possible. Casting. Direction.Make good choices kids.

#44- Peaky Blinders (Netflix) with audio description- I’m not fully buying the hype, though I’m not hating this either. it has the benefit of me really not liking Mobland. So, this is better than that.

#44- Tires (Netflix) with audio description- Occasionally funny, occasionally makes me cringe, but seems to be attracting some really fantastic guest stars this season. Jon Lovitz, Thomas Haden Church, and Vince Vaughn?

#45- FUBAR (Netflix) with audio description- Deeply mediocre but I will keep watching because of Arnold. If they go for a season 3, please find him better talent to bounce off of.

#46- Dark Winds (AMC Plus) with audio description- I have located audio description for Season 1, and I’m getting through it so I can watch Season 2 with audio description on Netflix. This is an interesting show.

#47- Countdown (Amazon) with audio description- I want so much more from this show. it has some really solid moments. truly. The whole thing in episode 3, faking the escape, was realy good. But it trips over itself a lot, and the writers end up landing in scenes that make no sense. Jensen Ackles needs to have this cancelled. he’d be better off in a Tracker spinoff, or doing a Soldier Boy series.

#48- Department Q (Netflix) with audio description- One episode left. Next week will be its exit.

#50- Back To The Frontier (MAX) with audio description- A reality show that has families pretending to be pioneers. the audio description is limited around a built in narrator who comments quite a bit.

#51- A different World (Netflix) with audio description- I saw a classic sitcom on Netflix with audio description I had never seen before, and decided to check it out. Honestly, this debut is low, but I think this is likely to trend upwards. I didn’t watch the Cosby Show either, however, I think due to Nick At Nite, I have seen two or three episodes in my life. I’ve never watched this, so understanding the characters will just take more than the one episode I watched.

#52- destination X (Peacock) with audio description- I don’t care who wins. I watch for Jeffrey Dean Morgan. The audio description is fine, but I’ve also realized it can’t do what the show wants, which are all these “clues” Morgan hides as to where they are located.

#53- Sherlock and daughter (HBO MAX) no audio description- I like the rude way the guy plays Sherlock. That’s the driving force right now.

#54- Sullivan’s Crossing (Netflix) with audio description- I know people like this. I’m really gonna try. I’ve seen two episodes and I’m deeply bored, and I was actually excited to find out chad Michael Murray was a series regular. did not know that.

#55- The Guilded Age (HBO MAX) with audio description- Can’t fall off because I watch this for and with someone else. I could leave it at 60, but it is in no actual danger of falling off the watchlist.

#56- The Art Detectives (Acorn) no audio description- My prime day channel this year was Acorn, so quitting this show after one episode. Feels like a waste. it is REALLY hard to follow though. I might have to, and find something else.

#57- Prison Break (Netflix) no audio description- even with the pending revival, i can’t see myself watching this much of a show that isn’t super easy to follow without audio description. I’m three episodes in, and while the premise is cool, it is also not an easy show to follow.

#58- the Kardashians (Hulu) with audio description- The hate watching lives on. These girls are so silly.

#59- Kings Of Johburg (Netflix) with audio description- Considering I’m 4 episodes into a three season run, being next to last is not where you want to be. It does have its moments, but I like other crime dramas more.

#60- Nautilus (AMC Plus) with audio description- it was dead last last week. It is so hard to follow, but I’m actually interested in the subject matter. So, when the last spot came down to a trio of shows, i decided to save Nautilus, because I want to watch it. It is so up my alley, but like 100 Years Of Solitude on Netflix, it desperately needs audio description, and I don’t know how many more weeks I can justify this.

So, I’m actually killing two shows with audio description. I just don’t get Such Brave girls (Hulu). I’ve seen three episodes, and that is enough for me to bail. Sadly it does have audio description, and it seems the audio description is Ok. I wouldn’t give it an award, but it does what most half hours do. the other show, is America’s got Talent. this one sucks, because. The audio description is great, but I just never liked how America’s Got talent continues to platform singers who have a dozen shows they can compete on. I love singing competition shows, and I wish this sent singers packing, unless they’re like a giant choir or something. Go audition for the Voice. That being said, this audio description is amazing, it is a best case scenario audio description for this show. Change nothing. I have no notes. I’m sadly dropping easily one of the best audio description tracks on the list. Every episode is long as hell, and I’m just not compelled. Sorry.

Say Something!
