The Too Much TV Roundup- 08/19/23

RIP Ron Cephas Jones. Only 66. Wow. He’s sure to be known for his work on This Is Us, but he’s done many other projects, and just didn’t gain that level of recognition (or Emmy award) until that show. his daughter, Jasmine Cephas Jones is also a brilliant actress, currently starring on Starz’s Blindspotting.

13) Hey Dude (Paramount Plus)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

I remember loving this show so much as a kid. It doesn’t even play to that young of an audience either. Yet, I find myself struggling to enjoy a show again that just feels under produced and not well written. Oddly, Christine Taylor came out of this, and I’ve been trying to commit my nostalgic rewatches to 10 episodes, but this one is going to be a challenge. I’m only 3 episodes in now.

12) The horror Of Delores Roach (Amazon)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Not Yet Renewed

Look, I want Justina machado to have a great show for her talents. This just isn’t it. I’ve given this show now 4 episodes of my time, and while the discomfort of the Sweeney Todd angle at the beginning didn’t make me squirm, I did question her judgment when she agreed to give a massage to someone who clearly did not like her, and surprise! It didn’t work out well. Again. Somewhere this show had a good concept, it just has no idea what to do with it.

11) 8 Simple Rules (Disney Plus)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

Surprisingly, I’m still in Season 1. Paul’s daughters are once again fighting, and it feels so inconsequential, but he has to step in and fix it. I should be close to the season finale.

Episode Grade: B-

10) Painkiller (Netflix)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Limited Series

DopeSick is just way better. The only thing Painkiller has is actual testimonies from surviving family members who lost someone to Oxy. The second episode has a hard time balancing its many storylines. And, as much as I’d love to praise Matthew Broderick, Michael Stuhlbarg just did it way better.

9) Foundation (Apple Plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Not Yet Renewed

It has so many cool ideas, but I never really understand what this show is or trying to do, and I refuse to try and rewatch this whole thing just to see if I can follow it. I’m sure the production values look great though. I guess that guy was deemed not worthy by the prophet?

Episode Grade: B

8) Futurama (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

Still in Season 2, as I realize it will take me forever to get to 11. The crew goes fishing, we learn about mermaids, and the lost city of Atlanta. I still think this show needs audio description, but the lost City of Atlanta was a solid joke.

Episode Grade: B

7) Survival Of The Thickest (Netflix)

If you aren’t going to explain how the peanut butter and ice works…. I mean, I learn all my life hacks from TV shows. Come on now. I might need that information someday. Seriously, Michelle Bhuto is hilarious, and she seems to have a really solid supporting cast.Peppermint’s Olive Garden jokes were the best.

Episode Grade: B+

6) Frasier (Paramount Plus)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Revival Coming Soon

Niles becomes a theatre critic, so Frasier wants to be one too. Eddie attacks a hamster that was mistaken for a rat, which creates kind of a lazy B-plot for the episode.

5) Game Of Thrones (MAX)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Ended

Dani had the best scene in the episode at the very end, when that one guy stepped up for her so she could free some slaves. Otherwise, this episode was post-Joffrey death, and it’s so hard to follow that up. We filled it with Jamie raping Cersei. And, I guess Tommen is king now? Not to mention, since I’m rewatching this, I know Tyrion ain’t dying. Although, first time through, I didn’t think he would either.

Episode Grade: B+

4) The Office (Peacock)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

Just starting Season 2, and this is where you start to see the show really find its footing. The Dundees. Not to mention Dwight trying to police the bathrooms. Also, they start using more of the ensemble.

Episode Grade: B+

3) Veep (MAX)

English Audio description?: Yes

Selina is put in a will she or will she not endorse a candidate problem when her poll numbers crash. She also cries a lot.

Episode Grade: A-

2) 10 Year Old Tom (MAX)

English Audio Description?: Yes

The whole sketch with the crossing guard was hilariously perfect. It might be one of my favorite sketches from the show. A show I actually laugh out loud over.

Episode Grade: A

1) What We Do In The Shadows (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Not Yet Renewed

Guillermo is still trying to figure out his massive problem, while the boys have a night out, and Nadja laments not having female friends. The audio description for this series is sparse, admittedly, but it comes in in very necessary places. Like when someone explodes.
