The Too Much TV Roundup- 08/11/23

The TV news cycle is really slow right now. The WGA met, and were made a counter offer that they are taking a look at. Sadly, they did not release the counter offer to the press. It’s possible that they believe there’s actually something to work with here.

13) Hey Dude (Paramount Plus)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

It’s boys vs girls at the ranch, in an anything you can do I can do better storyline. It’s also Danny’s birthday. And this show has no audio description. Even though I watched this back when I was six or seven, and loved the hell out of it, it hasn’t been quite a rewarding memory lane trip just yet. I suppose this will be hit and miss.

Episode Grade: C+

12) Desperate Housewives (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

The plot is thickening. Gabrielle gets her mother in law in trouble when she realizes she has a terrible gambling addiction, and Marcia Cross has her Harry Met Sally moment when she catches her therapist out for lunch and stops by to convince him she is not the problem in bed. On the darker side of things, the kid whose Mom killed herself in the pilot is now living in some medical facility. There’s an attempt to get in to see how he’s doing, and in that you get the idea that he doesn’t really need to be there. The plot thickens. I picked up a little bit more in this episode than usual, but this show really needs audio description.

Episode Grade: B-

11) Mulligan (Netflix)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Not Yet Renewed

Well, the voice talent kept me around all season, but this is a show that needs better writers for this voice talent. I’m not really hooked. I really doubt I’d watch a second season.

Episode Grade: B-, Season 1 Grade: B-

10) Friends (MAX)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Ended

I feel like it’s been a while since a Chandler centric episode, then i get one, and I realize this isn’t one of those memorable episodes. What exactly does he do? Still stuck in Season 3, and still missing Richard.

Episode Grade: B-

9) Chip and Dale’s Rescue Rangers (Disney Plus)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

The Rangers have to locate a missing kitten, which does not thrill Monterey Jack, until they come across robot dogs that are being used to kidnap all the cats in the city… for nefarious purposes. It is now up to the rangers to save things that want to eat them, except they are kittens, so they are adorable and not aggressive yet. This is the second episode, and felt WAY more like a pilot for the series than the first episode. Audio Description would be nice for Zipper, as he is always doing things, but is a non verbal character.

Episode Grade: B

8) 911 (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

Remember those kids who tried to film a YouTube video about cementing a microwave on one of their heads? They’re back. The perpetual problem with this show not having audio description, is that the gang is always off to some disaster we never get described. In this case, it’s a murder!Episode Grade: B

Episode Grade: B

7) The Wonder Years (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Summer Burn Offs Are Never A Good Sign

Bradley Whitford guest stars. Swingers might be involved.

Episode Grade: B+

6) The Golden Girls (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Ended

I’m one of the minority that enjoys Stan’s character, and doesn’t mind Dorothy and he supposedly about to get remarried. Of course, that would mess up the house dynamic, and this is Season 6 not 7, and it’s not even near the end of Season 6 to qualify as a cliffhanger.

Episode Grade: B+

5) The Good Wife (Paramount Plus)

English Audio Description?: no

Status: Ended

I’m saving the breaking of non-audio described programming above a B+ now for special episodes that just kicked ass. This one, where the ass prosecutor on the Florick case tries to call Kalinda as a witness was a nice turn around. Kalinda brought up to a judge that the prosecutor was having her monitor multiple judges, and kept referring to one that liked African American prostitutes. Not surprisingly, this judge found in favor of the Florick, and he gets a retrial. Don’t get me wrong, I still need audio description, to understand crime scenes and evidence I can’t see, but that moment was pretty effing great.

Episode Grade: A-

4) Full Circle (MAX)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Limited Series

At the end of this, since it clearly wants us to have no clue what in the actual fuck is happening, it will either be the worst show of the year, or the best. I’m very intrigued, but God I hope this sticks the landing.

Episode Grade: A-

3) Never Have i Ever (Netflix)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Final Season

A Paxton centric episode that shows him growing up. It works.

Episode Grade: A-

2) Veep (MAX)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Ended

Might the VP be pregnant? Can her team keep a secret? Of course not.

Episode Grade: A

1) Jack Ryan (Amazon)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Final Season

Man, I’m going to miss this show. Seasons 3 and 4 are just tremendous. Not only am I excited for a michael Pena spinoff, but Wendell Pierce had some truly great moments here. It’s so simple to just stand in the doorway and see a kid in a coma and think he’s being used in this nefarious plot.
