The Small Screen Diaries: The Weekly Rankings

Once again I’m running down the sixty shows on my broad watchlist. Joining the list this week, which was fairly slow for new shows, are The Sandman (Netflix), All Of Us Are Dead (Netflix), The Office (Peacock), Such Brave Girls (Hulu), Nautilus (AMC Plus), Dexter (Paramount Plus), and Prison Break (Netflix). I wrapped some shows, and anything that would rank outside the top 60 dies.

WINNER: Squid Game (Netflix) with audio description- I knew I was going to lose my favorites. After the tragic uprising didn’t work last season, it meant playing out Squid Game till the end. I’m only two episodes in, but I’ve never seen so many spoilers so quickly. It is a good thing they don’t bother me. The audio description by IDC is terrific, and even the dub voice cast brings a lot to the performances.

Runner Up: From (MGM Plus) with audio description- I do love the lore laden horror series, which continues to confound by twisting its plot around and round. I’m close to finishing Season 2, then one more to go before I’m fully caught up.

#3- Black Mirror (Netflix) with audio description- While it is true that not every episode is as good as the one that preceded it, the series is still interesting, and promotes intelligent conversation about where we may be headed.

#4- The Pitt (MAX) with audio description- the HBO drama keeps enriching its wide ensemble, and investing in ultimately heartbreaking endings. I didn’t give this show its due the first time around, and it has proven me very wrong. this is great TV.

#5- The Bear (Hulu) with audio description- I really enjoyed the middle of the season, and I still have two episodes to go. Since The Bear was renewed for another season, this has to end in some way that allows for continuation. even though the gang is up against a wall, I can’t see this restaurant closing. What would Season 5 be? Ayo Edebiri is stealing this season, and the audio description is one of the best on this list.

#6- Poker Face (Peacock) with audio description- Only one episode really stumbled for me, and the rest have done a solid job of showcasing guest stars, and continuing to give Natasha Lyonne a platform for her sarcastic brand of humor. Another show with pretty consistently solid audio description. is Roy Samuelson narrating everything right now?

#7- Mindhunter (Netflix) with audio description- David Fincher’s drama that looks at the beginning of serial killer profiling is exciting and thrilling, and if you never got the chance, Fincher has floated the idea of doing a continuation of the series in film form. it’s also the reason I started to catch up. the audio description is written well, but the narration is a little flat for my taste, though I know people prefer flatness. To each their own.

#8- Last week Tonight (MAX) no audio description- I’m keeping this the highest ranked show without audio description. I can forgive it a bit more because of how rushed the process is, and I do believe HBO adds audio description eventually.

#9- the Office (Peacock) no audio description- this would be higher if it had audio description, but with how much of a boon this is for Peacock, and them not have audio description is so weird. i refuse to place it too high, so it has to stay just below Last week Tonight. I’m like midway into Season 3. I had already started a rewatch, and I’m just continuing in preparation for the remake.

#10- Bet (Netflix) with audio description- i am obsessed. Netflix will break my heart and cancel this. They axed the Shonda Rhimes backed The Residence, and that had so much potential with Uzo Aduba’s detective character to investigate murders at different places. Bet also has excellent audio description.

#11- Breaking Bad (Netflix) with audio description- Loving this first time through. It probably should be higher, and likely will be as the series keeps going. this also has some really great audio description.

#12- Smoke (Apple Plus) with audio description- I’ve only seen the first two episodes, but I’m absolutely hooked. I love that we have two pyromaniacs and we know who one is, but not the other. Taron Edgerton, Jurnee Smollett, and Greg Kinnear are a nice little ensemble. Again, does roy sleep? He’s narrating three shows on my top 12 so far, and technically 4, since he did the first season of From.

#13- Duster (MAX) with audio description- this originally started down in the high 30’s and rose quite unexpectedly this high. it isn’t quite like the Pitt, which fell off the list, only to come back on and reach the top 5, but it is still a lot of growth. I hope MAX is down for Season 2, because that’s a pretty big cliffhanger.

#14- The Sandman (Netflix) with audio description- Just one episode into the new season. it is an odd duck of a show, and I remember liking some episodes last season more than others. The season premiere has a lot of story, so if you don’t remember Season 1, I’m not sure it matters.

#5- Iron Heart (Disney Plus) with audio description- it started and ended with good episodes, and it was more entertaining to me than the Daredevil reboot. My magic wand would have allowed this to run for at least eight episodes, because it feels truncated and rushed. Never fear character development. Some pretty solid audio description as well. The internet trolls can be haters on RiRi Williams, but I hope she’s here to stay.

#16- Murderbot (Apple Plus) with audio description- One more episode left I assume. But the bigger question is if Apple will give this a second season. i certainly hope so. it is just a lot of fun, and perhaps Season 2 can have a fresh take from a new AD writer.

#17- Adults (Hulu) with audio description- I can feel that they are getting closer together as a unit, and they are bouncing better off themselves. I’d be interested to see this friend group evolve over more seasons.

#18- Stick (Apple Plus) with audio description- I see this in 18th and it makes me realize I have an embarrassment of riches right now. this is a delightful comedy that is the heir apparent to ted lasso.

#19- The Daily Show (Paramount Plus) no audio description- They’ve been off the past two weeks. I miss them.

#20- Pop Culture Jeopardy (Amazon) with audio description- This is a long ass season if you only do one episode a week like me.

#21- Silicon Valley (MAX) with audio description- Funny, and worth watching. A previous Emmy nominee for Comedy Series. pretty sure the narrator is Dave Wallace.

#22- Scrubs (Peacock) no audio description- The revival is coming, and I’m just trying to do a rewatch.

#23- Euphoria (MAX) with audio description- Certainly a complicated series, with some unlikable characters, but it also has some beautiful moments and terrific performances. i doubt it will ever be in my Top 10, but I’m getting perspective on something I initially quit after the first episode. And to be honest, after 4 episodes, I still hate the pilot the most.

#24- The Waterfront (Netflix) with audio description- this violent crime drama doesn’t mess around. It aims to be another Ozark or bloodline for Netflix, and star holt McCallany is also in Mindhunter. Topher Grace just joined the cast in a role that is delightfully against type.

#25- Nine Perfect Strangers (Hulu) with audio description- I wish they didn’t focus so much on Mark Strong’s character, because there’s some tremendous talent in the ensemble that feels wasted. i want to spend more time with Murray Bartlett, Christine Baranski, and Dolly Deleon. I like Mark Strong, but parts of this season feel misguided. But, it is this high because the performances are sometimes stellar.

#26- The Better Sister (Amazon) with audio description- Admittedly, the show just got a little interesting by finishing the trial with two episodes remaining, and dropping some little bombs along the way that could open the door to an unpredictable ending I thought we weren’t going to get.

#27- And Just Like that (MAX) with audio description- I remain optimistic that the growing problems in Aidans life will send him packing. But when he showed up this week, I definitely was like “this bitch.” I’ve watched all of Sex and the City, and for me, Aiden was the most boring date she had, it’s just John Corbett has nothing going on. I thought about lowering this, but both Lisa and Charlotte had some heavy material thrown their way.

The Buccaneers (Apple plus) with audio description- It is starting to climb a bit. I did like the Christmas episode, but james is such a little bitch. I hope he gets some weird old timey disease like the plague, or consumption.

#29- All Of Us Are Dead (Netflix) with audio description- this Korean import finally got some audio description. A second season is coming. Sadly, Netflix didn’t quite give this audio description track the TLC Squid Game got, and even some of the dub cast read lines that feel like they weren’t interpreted correctly. Aside from that, it is as entertaining as I thought it would be to see a High School swarmed by zombies.

#30- Drag Race All Stars (Paramount Plus) with audio description- I’m Team Ginger. How this show ranks depends on them staying in the competition. It has been too damn long, too many seasons, and Ginger deserves to finally win.

#31- Motorheads (Amazon) with audio description- One episode left. I know they’re gonna lose that damn car. I can feel it.

#32- Dexter (Paramount Plus) with audio description- Likely to climb, though this is the season of Julia Stiles, and every conversation I’ve had with Dexter fans always said she was the literal worst. Then again, I don’t just follow trends. Look at that Ironheart ranking. How about me putting Bet above Breaking Bad? I do what I want. She could be amazing… for me.

#33- The Great North (Hulu) no audio description- the top of the not audio described Animation Domination.

#34- Futurama (Hulu) no audio description yet- Ranking this behind The Great North.

#35- King Of The Hill (Hulu) no audio description- And the last of the trio. All pretty close to each other.

#36- We Were Liars (Amazon) with audio description- I want more from this series, and the audio description. though, it does have a way of yanking out these really dark moments and landing some emotional weight in spite of the perky audio description.

#37- revival (Peacock) with audio description- worst audio description on this list. the premise of the show keeps it alive, but it is written so poorly, because they are trying to attract whoever still watches SyFy.

#38- Bosch Legacy (Amazon) with audio description- I’m down to just the series finale, so this will be done next week.

#39- Ginny and Georgia (Netflix) with audio description- it takes the kitchen sink approach to being melodramatic by making sure everyone is in some state of hyper unrest. Still, better than I remembered, though it was a bumpy first season.

#40- Yellowstone (Peacock) with audio description- Episode 12 started to make the show better, and then episode 13 finally started showing some signs of life. There’s hope for the spinoffs yet.

#41- Countdown (Amazon) with audio description- I liked episode 3 more than the first two, so if we can streamline the focus a bit more behind Jensen Ackles, we might have a show.

#42- Department Q (Netflix) with audio description- I don’t know what to do with this. I feel like I’m missing the magic, and I’ll have to rewatch this whenever the next season comes out.

#43- Peaky Blinders (Netflix) with audio description- Another show with tons of hype. It’s Ok. I’m not saying it’s bad, I just don’t feel the thing that has drawn people in and made this a little cult hit.

#44- FUBAR (Netflix) with audio description- Props for that Tom Arnold guest spot. Now we just need Jamie Lee Curtis, though she’s killing it on The Bear.

#45- Tires (Netflix) with audio description- I’m still lobbying for Thomas Haden Church to be upped to series regular.

#46- Prison Break (Netflix) no audio description- A cool premise, for a show I’ve never seen, that has a reboot coming. Though, it is a pain in the ass without audio description, and to watch 90 episodes of this feels like an order too tall to fill.

#47- Yes Chef (Peacock) mostly with audio description- Done. No audio description for the finale. I didn’t care who won.

#48- Love Death and robots (Netflix) with audio description- I’m hoping I finish this next week.

#49- Destination X (Peacock) with audio description- Brutal. The person eliminated last week did nothing wrong.

#50- Sherlock and Daughter (MAX) no audio description- I love this brutally sarcastic take on Sherlock, but there are a lot of mediocre actors populating the ensemble, and it lacks audio description.

#51- Dark Winds (Netflix) no audio description yet- Netflix doesn’t have AD for Season 1. I found audio description for Season 1, so now I’m catching up so I can get to season 2 with audio description on Netflix.

#53- Such Brave Girls (Hulu) with audio description- new season starts this week, so I thought I’d go ahead and check it out. meh. It has some charm, but I think this will get pushed off the list. I have a feeling.

#54- The Guilded Age (MAX) with audio description- I don’t watch this for me, so it will always be low, but it cannot fall off the list until someone else decides to quit the show. So, it is safe.

#55- America’s Got Talent (Peacock) with audio description- Was there no new episode this week? Peacock is trying to gaslight me if that’s not true.

#56- Kings Of Johburg (Netflix) with audio description- i want to support international shows, but not all are my thing. This show has three seasons, and much like another show that is getting the axe this week, it just seems likely I’ll be kicking this off next week.

##57- the Kardashians (Hulu) with audio description- The ultimate hate watch stays just barely afloat.

#59- Nautilus (AMC Plus) no audio description- It may still technically be on the list, but the pilot was such a bitch to sit through without AD last week, I fully expect to have not continued, and for this show to also be dead next week.

#60- Lazarus (MAX) with audio description- i did it. I stayed committed, and I finished. And it finished last place.

failed to Make the top 60 And Therefore Is Now Dead: No man’s land (Hulu)- I did try the season finale, but like i said with kings Of Johburg, some shows aren’t my thing, and a sad, dark, depressing drama about terrorism is a tough sell.

Say Something!
