The Small Screen Diaries- 06/10/24

OK. So I was right about the choice to name the show Eric (Netflix), meaning we get some materialization of this monster. The audio description when we do see him walks such a weird line, like… am I supposed to be scared? Is he funny? Goofy? His voice is dark, but the scenes he appears in it would seem if he was too much he’d be pulling too much focus. What an odd and interesting concept though.

I did finish American Rust (Amazon) which almost looked like it was headed to not having the ability to have a second season, but then leaves that door wide open. I’m hoping Amazon sticks with it, because Season 2 was better than Season 1, and the audio description was terrific. The team of Heck/Dick did some solid work over ten episodes.

I also finished, as the overachiever I am, Under The Bridge (Hulu), which gave its best ending by revealing what happened to everyone. It’s not all wine and roses. Some really sad “where are they now?” Moments for these characters. I see a lot of people leaning on Riley Keogh for the Emmy’s, and not enough people for Archie Punjabi. Let’s do the right thing.

I would still recommend the first season of Them (Amazon) over season two, but because season two isn’t bad, I still want a third season since this is an anthology series. The ideas expressed, I understand them, I just think season 1 did a better and scarier job of realizing them. This one is a bit more obvious horror, and less intellectual.

I keep watching Good Times (Netflix) for the fleeting 5-10% of the show that works. 90% of this could be found in ANY adult animated show, there’s nothing biting or particularly satirical here. I’ll say it every week, The Boondocks did it better, and so did the original good Times.

I’m really enjoying the new season of Pretty Little Liars: Summer School (MAX) which almost axed one of the main five in the third episode. I actually had a prediction of who would get the cut this episode, but they did not, and they also ended up in the safe zone where the only way they could be the killer is if there are two killers. Scream much?

And for classic TV lovers, a friendly reminder that Friends has audio description on MAX. That episode really highlighted the unrealistic nature of living in NYC, when Phoebe just happens to have 500 dollars to lend to Monica, yet… what does she do for a living? how does she pay rent?

Say Something!
