The Too Much TV Roundup- 07/24/23

Just a small note to kick us off today, if you happened to be one of those fans who loved Grease: Rise Of The Pink Ladies, and were broken when paramount Plus cancelled the series and dropped it, good news! It is getting a physical media release. So you can own it forever and ever. No word on if the audio description will follow it to the DVD release.

11) Futurama (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: revival (Season 11) is now available.

So I’m still on Season 2. It’s gonna take me a while to get to 11. The funniest thing about this episode was the car shopping, and the ridiculous name for the car, and that the seats were stuffed with eagle feathers. Points then immediately detracted for taking a swipe at the LGBT community, so this was a pretty easy selection for last place.

Episode Grade: C+

10) Young Sheldon (MAX)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Renewed

Sheldon is upset when he doesn’t win the science fair, so he quits science and turns into a rebel, eventually turning to acting. Shoutout to Jason Alexander as a guest star, but hearing his Texan accent was so bizarre. Some people are just not meant to play people with southern accents.

9) And Just Like That (MAX)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Not Yet Renewed

Lisa’s mother in law is like out of control nasty. But, I’m also happy that this episode immersed me enough in one of the newer characters so I could have an opinion on them. That’s been the biggest struggle. Meanwhile, it’s not that I’m a prude, but there’s an entire storyline here with Charlotte devoted to fixing her husbands inability to ejaculate on her tits. I have to wonder, how does a plot like this come up? Was she excited for this storyline? Are we supposed to be cheering it on because it’s sex positive and women can do anything? Because, in basically the same episode, Charlotte is offered a dream job she turns down because “her kids need her”. So if you were trying to do something by having her scream “cum on my tits”, and follow that up with “I can’t work, I ahve kids.” Then maybe this plot line isn’t as female empowered as you think it is?

8) George and Tammy (Paramount Plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Limited

This show is so interesting to me on one level, hard to watch on another, terrific in some aspects, but also with its faults. The lengths this series is willing to go to in order to make sure there are no remaining George jones fans left in the world is pretty amazing. At the same time, watching terrible things happen to Tammy over and over isn’t really entertainment. Michael Shannon is up against Evan Peters for his Emmy this year, and this show is really making me question if George jones should be on that stage or Jeffrey Dahmer. Neither of them were good for women, but there’s something even more insidious about awarding someone who we allowed to be an icon for so long while they secretly were creating such harmful and destructive moments off stage. I wouldn’t vote for either. But, Shannon has flipped this role into something akin to the Dahmer role where I’m not really excited to see either actor win for playing the “complexities” of evil.

7) X-Men (Disney Plus)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

While Sabertooth has been on the team in other iterations, it was crazy for Professor X to leave Jubilee in charge of him, even if he was locked up. This is the 4th episode of the series. Jubilee is barely a member of the team, and has little to no combat training. The hell is she supposed to do if he breaks out, which of course he does. Come on now.

6) The Lake (Amazon)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Not Yet Renewed

Riley is storming off to Canada. So i guess Justin really can’t ever make it up to him. Turns out maybe Mimzy burned down the boat house. What a strange twist of fate. And how do you get fired for planting trees? I didn’t even realize she was getting paid to do that. I just assumed she was volunteering for a non-profit type situation.

Episode Grade: B+

5) The Good Wife (Paramount Plus)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Spinoff Coming At Midseason

I liked how Alicia helped this Stern guy get off with just probation for his arrest, and he was a very interesting character. he paid it forward by helping Alicia by confirming that he knows her husband was framed, but he won’t “be her deep throat”. What frustrates me about this episode, is that Alicia decides she’s a parent again, and when she hears that her son had a girl in his room, she freaks out and takes away all of his stuff. The problem with that is, her son is Young Sherlock and trying to figure out who has been leaving packages, how the tape was faked, and some really important stuff. She doesn’t know that, but dammit, let Harriet The Spy do his thing.

4) 911 (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Moving To ABC

I can’t claim that every moment of this episode was easy to understand without audio description, but the ending of this episode was so intense, I couldn’t not move it up a notch. It’s still frustrating that they stopped providing audio description after Season 2, but when hen is involved in the accident, and we know it was this young girl who had such a promising future, and hen is absolutely losing her shit, i really felt it. Audio description or not, her acting was off the charts, and the direction in just those final moments was tremendous. Athena coming in and telling Hen to shut up and stop admitting to hitting her, was such a show of strength. Of course, Athena just wants to hold her friend, but at the same time, she needs to protect her from herself. The rest of the episode was typical 911 stuff.

3) XO Kitty (Netflix)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Renewed

I’m actually surprised how much this show is growing on me, and in this detention episode, Kitty and yuri find out the answers they need about their moms. One is a little disappointing for Kitty, but yuri really comes through for her in the end, and finally feels empowered to tell her wicked witch mother to go pound sand.

Episode Grade: A

2) The Wonder Years (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Likely The Final Season

If you don’t know what blockbusting is, than watch this. This episode clearly had something to say, about a realtor who tries to bring black families into white neighborhoods, so that the property value (at the time) would go down and some people would move, and they could turn a profit. Of course, our Wonder family finds out, and will not be used this way, and chooses to stay right where they are.

1) Silo (Apple Plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Renewed

Every episode ends on such a mic drop that I assume it’s the finale. Silo is easily in the Top 10 new shows of 2023. It might even be in my Top 5. The rollercoaster this season has been is quite amazing. I’m very much here for a second season. I can’t believe I’m saying this, with once again how Episode 9 ends, but there appears to be one more episode. How can they possibly top themselves?

Episode Grade: A+
