The Too Much TV Roundup- 07/31/23

RIP Paul Reubens. Such an unexpected blow. For a lot of people my age, he really helped to shape our childhoods. His Playhouse was a magnificent ball of fun, and his movies certainly were head scratchers for critics, but not kids. Thanks for the laughs, pee Wee. you certainly had an awfully big adventure.

13) FUBAR (Netflix)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Renewed

I’m not sure all the ideas are still working. Between a breakup, and then also being spurned by Alden, things aren’t looking up for one member who also ends the episode in a precarious position. Meanwhile, Arnie seems to make headway with his ex, or does he? And, if Fortune is the mole, I’m going to be so upset. She’s frequently the best thing about every episode, but her saying she couldn’t get the safety off her rocket launcher had me thinking.

12) Family Matters (MAX)

Rachel likes someone but doesn’t want to tell them about Richie because most guys run when they find out she’s a single mother. Sadly, I don’t think this plot is outdated.

11) Buffy The Vampire Slayer (Hulu)

When I started watching buddy again, a show I loved the first time around, I had no idea how much the lack of audio description would throw this episode. The good that came out was that Cordelia moves closer to being one of the gang, and Angel has a friendly conversation with Giles about the Master. Anyone who knows Buffy knows this dynamic is about to change dramatically.

10) Cheers (Paramount Plus)

Even in an episode that finally really let Rhea Perlman shine a bit more, I’ve still got Shelly long’s Diane in the background who has clearly had a mental breakdown and the writers have no idea what to do with her. Please write her off soon. I think I’m somewhere in Season 4. I hope Kirstie Alley shows up soon.

9) The Wonder Years (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Summer Burn Off’s Are Never Good

We get some of that Black Church choir drama in here, but not before a surprisingly terrific vocal, which wasn’t good enough for some… because it’s a choral experience or some nonsense. Listen, I saw Sister Act, and no one had a problem with Ms. Hill being Joyful Joyful. If you can sang, you can SANG.

8) X-Men (Disney Plus)

Audio Description would have helped here. While I’m familiar with the core team, I do not know or remember all the Morlocks. I was excited to see Callisto, and leech, but who else was down there? Sadly, scored lower this week than i would have wanted.

7) Community (Netflix)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: The movie Is Coming

It’s so crazy to start some of these shows over from Season 1, and realize that the seeds are just being planted. The humor is there, but it kicks up a notch when they get that vote of confidence from the network for more episodes.

I feel a little like Justin is standing in the way of his daughter doing something productive, but then again, Ivy is still trying to text the girl she fired. Listen, I know it’s just planting trees, but if she wanted to sue the non-profit for wrongful termination or some HR nightmare, she literally made out with ivy’s brother, got fired, and then ivy tried to make out with her. This girl could be running that non-profit by the end of this summer. Why aren’t they exploring that?

5) Justified (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

Some great moments in this episode, but it still doesn’t have audio description, and I’m not moving it above a B+. This was the Season 2 finale, so now I’m off to start a new season. I’ll be a little late to Primeval.

4) And Just Like That (MAX)

OK. So the guy Carrie met? She couldn’t wait one more day for him to submit for the deadline, she had to assume he was a fail and just leave? He seemed really nice, and even after she broke his wrist, he was still pretty nice to her. Come on now. This show doesn’t need Aiden. This guy was deserving of more than 1 episode. But, this show was ranked unusually high thanks to Sara Ramirez. Watching Che get that feedback on their show, and to hear those comments, even though they knew some comments would come up, that was still brutal.

3) All In The Family (FreeVee)

English Audio Description?: No

Most of the time, this show is trying to say something, but Edith finding a man wandering in his pajamas and bringing him home was just the kind of silly this show needed. It’s like a nice break. You don’t have to be topical and groundbreaking. Sometimes, Archie comes home, and there’s a man in his house ready for bedtime. That’s funny as is.

2) Game Of Thrones (MAX)

English Audio Description?: Yes

The season 4 premiere saw Jamie trying to fit back into his life, and Tywin still being a massive ass. i seriously don’t know how Joffrey hasn’t killed him yet. He’s killed others for far less. We do check in on jon Snow who is trying to warn the Knight’s Watch about Mance, and Arya, who is still running around with The hound. Oh, and Sansa. Brianne has a conversation with Jamie about his promise, but he’s also right. Where would he take Sansa? The rest of her family is dead, and no one has seen Arya. Sansa is married now to Tyrion, which is about as protected as she can get.

1) Silo (Apple Plus)

OK. Finally the season has wrapped. I’m obsessed. Like, I want to buy Silo gear or something. I’m actually more obsessed with this than i was The Last Of Us. That first season of Silo was incredible, and I can’t wait to return. An absolute must see. One of those rare occasions where i thought the season was perfect.
