The Too Much TV Roundup: 09/28/23

RIP Dumbledore. I loved both Richard Harris and Michael Gambon’s takes on Dumbledore, and since there is virtually nothing worth discussing in the world of TV and Film news, I’ll use my preamble area to mention the passing of Michael Gambon.

11) Alias (Disney Plus)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

Come on Disney! Put some audio description on it! This show always has some kind of action sequence set to music. As much as I love this show, it’s hard to keep ranking it dead last as unwatchable all the time because it is an action show with scenes that just don’t translate. Plus, it has early Bradley Cooper, before he ever had a Hangover, learned to be an American Sniper, or was shallow.

Episode Grade: Unwatchable

10) 10) Outlander (Starz)

English Audio Description?: no

Status: Final Season

Another show that just sucks to keep ranking low. It’s a good show, but I can’t in good conscience say that this show works without audio description. It’s always a very complicated and interweaving series, that routinely features scenes of violence that could use audio description like I think someone was burned by Molotov cocktail in this episode, and even occasionally other languages. It has such a good cast. That’s why I’m still here, trying to understand this damn thing after 7 seasons.

Episode Grade: Unwatchable

9) Family Matters (MAX)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Ended

I think it must have been demeaning as adult actors to have your screentime reduced because a side character was so popular, yet they didn’t want to spin him off. Urkel is now, even as early as the beginning of Season 2, the central focus of the entire episode. In the beginning, Eddie gets a scene with him where he’s doing something crazy like wrapping Urkel in bandages, and then the series tries to explore a heteronormative subplot that I guess some schools did where they forced students to pretend to be married for two weeks. Why? What was this assignment for? Even back then this should have been seen as problematic. So of course, Urkel and Laura end up married for two weeks. There’s another subplot about the actual parents for the family that should matter that is mostly sidelined, so Urkel can have maximum screentime. Does he have a home? Does he have parents? Does he have a key to the Winslow house? Either way, forcing Laura to marry Urkel, even if just for a classroom assignment, feels so incredibly outdated, even for its time.

8) The Masked Singer (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Presumably Renewed

While it’s fun to still guess the contestants, I can’t help but say that this show without audio description certainly is missing something. I am missing clues, and I have no real idea what the costumes look like. However, even without that information, I’ve still been able to guess contestants before. I didn’t guess this week’s eliminated contestant. I was very much on the Wayans train, but thinking Shawn hadn’t done anything in a while, and isn’t known for being a stand up comic, but is only really known for comedy.

Episode Grade: C+

7) Trophy Wife (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

Kate ends up in this weird situation at PTA, wile her husband is trying to figure out why some couple told their son he couldn’t go to Prom with his daughter. Also, the older son makes a video that feels very make-a-wish to try and get Vanessa Hudgens to be his prom date.

Episode Grade: B-

6) Killing it (Peacock)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Not Yet Renewed

Adding the brother back into the story, and giving him an entire episode of backstory, has made this show worse for me. Not only do I hate his brother now, but the show is now far more complicated. And do creditors actually send people out into the real world? Is that even a thing?Professional stalkers?

Episode Grade: B-

5) Celebrity Jeopardy (hulu)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Not Yet Renewed

This thing used to have audio description, but talks of merger at Hulu has made them lazy I suppose. So, no audio description for the new season. It was a match up of Ghosts vs Schitts Creek vs The morning Show, and I liked all three actors. I didn’t have a preference who won. I did feel bad for Emily Hampshire, who seemed really out of her depth at times.

Episode Grade: B

4) The Wheel of Time (Amazon)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Renewed?

Egweyn doesn’t do well for herself in this episode, but I do think the sisters are starting to realize that one of them is not on their side.I like this show enough, I just don’t love it.

Episode Grade: B+

3) Special Ops: Lioness (Paramount Plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Not Yet renewed?

This season went out with a bang, for sure. but to see the conversations the governemtn was having about not killing a terrorist, because he sells oil, was so cringey. I just agreed with the guy who kept saying “If you didn’t want him killed, you should have taken him off the kill list.” Not my favorite Taylor Sheridan show, but it is solid.

Episode Grade: B+

2) Community (Netflix)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Ended

This is the show that Chevy Chase said isn’t funny. Or maybe it’s just that he’s a pain in the ass to work with. Maybe he’s not funny anymore. After all, the pilot he shot after this that reteamed him with Beverly D’Angelo died as a pilot. Maybe it’s just him. This was an episode where the group considered adding a new member.

Episode Grade: A-

1) What We Do In The Shadows (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: I’ll just assume renewed.

Lazlo is down in the dumps, so the gang throws him a roast, which doesn’t end up working out well for Guillermo. Still, Nandor remains the only one who doesn’t know.
