The Small Screen Diaries- 06/13/24

I suppose most people want to hear that I started the new season of The Boys (Amazon), which is one of my favorite shows. I’m sad there will only be one more season after this, but if they plan on killing Butcher, as things aren’t looking good here, then I can understand it. Antony Starr’s profile has also risen a lot, and I’m sure he wants to explore film. The new season immediately introduced a new member of the seven, who gets recruited in the first episode, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan shows up. I assume he has a bat somewhere. I’m trying to stay mostly spoiler free, but it is obviously still The Boys vs Homelander, and how that plays out. The audio description has always been great, and no matter how icky the detail is, we get the description of it. White pubic hair? Done. Put it in there.

I finished Bodkin (Netflix), which had the kind of ending where I could see the characters mostly coming back if they decided to go the non-limited route. There’s possibility here. But, it also works really well as a tight limited series. Sadly, I don’t expect any Emmy nominations, but I did really enjoy this. Will Forte did some nice dramatic work.

This week’s episode of Evil (Paramount Plus) was totally nuts. Our resident Nun spent most of the episode trying to hunt down demons. Literally, demons. Andy is corrupted again by Feliz navidad into a really tense moment where he almost does something really terrible, and then does something a little less. A very bizarre and dark episode, indeed.

I’m still getting through the first season of We Are Lady Parts (Peacock) and I do like the original voice here, but not as much as I thought I would. I still like watching unique perspectives, and that has this in spades. I just want to laugh more. Weird thing was, for S1E3, I made sure I was on the audio description channel, and Iswear… there wasn’t any. Might have been a glitch, and it wouldn’t be the first time I’ve had that on Peacock. I remember when Champions first dropped, neither offered channel gave me AD, but then later when other people checked it out it was working. So, who knows. But I’ve definitely hit this with Peacock before, and usually it seems to just be a glitch that only ever affected me.

I started Presumed Innocent (Apple plus), which has Luke from the Handmaid’s Tale mumbling his dialogue so badly I found an interview that had already happened where an outlet had asked him about his “interesting choices” with his accent. He explains it, I still hate it, and I actually like him less now because of it. And, the director of this David E Kelly produced/written project. Luckily, it stars Jake “I’m Legally Blind” Gyllenhaal. A lot of his promo tour has revolved around his blindness, which he’s now talking about openly. You can read about it. I find it more interesting that he’s working with his brother-in-law, Peter sarsgaard. The pilot is not my favorite, since it makes odd choices. the show has a murder at the center, and maybe Gyllenhaal did it, even though he’s our protagonist. However, most mujeres of this ilk happen because of an affair the wife doesn’t know about. his wife, played by Oscar nominee Ruth Negga, reveals that she knows. So, why Jake doesn’t disclose that is so odd. It doesn’t have its hooks in me, but I generally like David E Kelly’s work, Gyllenhaal is doing solid work, and I’m sure later episodes will give Sarsgaard and Negga stuff to do.

And a friendly reminder I’m still catching up on 911 (Hulu), in season 5, which now has audio description.
