The Small Screen Diaries- 06/14/24

Geek Girl (Netflix) made me feel SO old in the third episode. So, our protagonist is this fairly functional high schooler who will be a model at some point, and the third episode centered around her and Nat not being able to initially sign because Harriet’s stepmother has issues. Then, we set up for her dad’s 40th birthday party. And I just felt so old. I was like, wait… I’m older than her dad? I could have this stepmother character as my spouse and Harriet as my daughter? It’s amazing how life reminds you all the time that you are somehow inadequate. I like the show, but I’m now emotionally triggered and apparently way behind in life.

Trying (Apple Plus) was so perfectly itself this episode, with Nicky unsuspectingly joining Princess on her continued journey to find out why her mom didn’t want her, and that doesn’t quite work out as expected. Meanwhile, Jason starts up a sports team for kids who get… well… he’s just doing The Bad News bears, so his son can play on a team.

The second episode of The Boys (Amazon) new season had some of its best work done by Jack Quaid, in moments that had nothing to do with superhero stuff. With his dad in critical condition, his mom shows up after leaving him and his dad when he was six, and this really gives Quaid some excellent material to go dramatic with. Some other stuff happens, mainly with Sage being absurdly ahead of everyone, and trying to set up Ryan as a new hero.

Queenie (Hulu), which I’m fairly certain is narrated by Tansy Alexander, is shaping up to be one of those “finding yourself” type shows. I see it labeled a lot as a drama, but I feel like with the title character having such biting inner commentary, it also wants to be funny. It’s walking a line that doesn’t really pull me in either way right now. I want more from it, one way or the other.

I also did catch up on another episode of Transformers: Earthspark (Paramount Plus), which is kind of interesting, but definitely feels like it has a current cartoon vibe, and not so much the Transformers of series past. Bumblebee talks in full sentences, and I’m pretty sure is voiced by Danny Pudi. It takes something away, though with the terrans I’m interested to see how this show uses them. If your kids like Transformers, this has fairly decent audio description. It doesn’t sound like it was recorded at the best level, or delivered to us at the best level, but after seeing a few kids shows, I’m learning very few can shape up to be Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous or Chaos Theory.
