The Small Screen Diaries- 06/22/2024

Well, I saw that coming. Bridgerton (Netflix) finally needed a bit of conflict this season, and it got some right at the tail end of Episode 6. Now, we’ll have to see if our lead romantic couple can withstand. Meanwhile, I don’t know what the problem with Francheska choosing John is. I must have missed that. Is he a chimney sweep or something? Whatever it is, romance is abound, and with the hint of a potential gay romance to take a more center position next season, the question remains is how would Bridgerton feature such a romance and stay relatively historically accurate? I say, Bridgerton has gotten attention for always taking the road not taken, so find a way to keep doing that.

Trying (Apple Plus) had a bit of an emotional journey for Nikki, who received a Mother’s Day card from princess that just said Nikki instead of Mom. Her reaction to it suggests that Princess previously had written mom, or at least not her first name. So, when they all go to the spa and things blow up, you kinda look at Princess and wonder… couldn’t you just have still written the word even though you’re on this personal journey to find someone who gave you up and doesn’t want to be found? I love Trying, but I also know no one who watches it.It must be bigger in the UK.

The GOAT (Amazon) was certainly pretty over the top in the talent competition episode, where William Hung made a guest appearance. Everyone on this show could have a job title of “a bit much”, and that would be pretty accurate. Still, that’s what makes this entertaining, and I get to discuss it because it has audio description, unlike the various international versions of The Traitors on Peacock.

I’m starting to lose a little faith in transformers: Earthspark (Paramount Plus), which came in a lot hotter, and now seems like a preschool version of Transformers sometimes. Rewatch the original cartoon, and you’ll see that kids back in the day used to be able to handle storylines. This episode was about doing chores. Like, what even is this?

Also, poor Maya Rudolph on Loot (Apple Plus), who finally gets up the nerve to choose Arthur, after what is decidedly ‘a day’, and then there’s this woman’s voice behind him. Looks like Molly is going to need to make bolder choices in Season 3. Also, is that birthmark scene what I think it is? because shows nowadays typically don’t have those storylines due to all the preventative measures. Just wondering, because it really seemed to hit him hard.

Also, I did an episode of The Weakest Link (Peacock), which thankfully has audio description on Peacock.
