The Small Screen Diaries- 05/09/24

Well, they are officially developing a new The Office for peacock, so that’s terrifying. I don’t know how you manage to get such a perfect cast a second time around. The Frasier reboot lacks the chemistry of the original cast, and that series still has one returning series regular. Be afraid, be very afraid.

Dark Matter (Apple Plus) continues on in episode two, with the twist now having been revealed. It is going to be a huge pain in the ass, but we have to always use Jason 2 to describe the other Jason. I felt like there were times where perhaps it got lax because it was established, but then I was thinking, I don’t know what lies ahead for this trippy science fiction series, so it’s best ton just always say Jason 2, even if he’s already been established for a scene, because there is a lot of potential for confusion, especially considering there now can be 2nd’s of other characters.

Baby Reindeer (Netflix), which is already a dark show, has this rape-centric episode with a trigger warning in the middle of it. I felt like it was described well enough that the message and meaning of things that were suggested or implied came across. Plus, you have the inner thoughts from the lead character narrating the experience. I can’t believe there’s someone out there claiming to be the real Martha and trying to convince others that she’s not crazy, and she’s really the victim. But… were you previously arrested for stalking like the series Martha was?

American Rust (Amazon/free Vee) continues its excellence in audio description through the fifth episode. Our leads are nervous about whether or not planting the lighter did anything to help, or if Vic found out. Well, by the end of the episode, Jeff Daniel’s certainly found out the answer to that question, and the series ramps up the tension. Season 2 is better than season 1. Hopefully Amazon allows themselves the grace to continue this show, since they are doing a much better job with it.

The big Door Prize (Apple Plus) revealed “the next level’ to the audience, and some of the towns folk. As people continue to contemplate what their Morpho cards mean, they make plans for the future. I’m generally pretty happy with this audio description.

Velma (MAX) found out about another possible death, meaning the killer has struck again, and the plot thickens for Velma and the gang.Norville is still suffering panic attacks. Seriously, I think I’m going to keep watching this unless MAX cancels it, but I also have no problem with that.

The Equalizer (Paramount Plus) saw the loss of a recurring character, which means we must be near the end of the season. Don’t fret, CBS has already renewed this show for next season. It won’t quite get to 100 episodes next season, it will need at least one more after that to get there.

So the ABC/Hulu passing of audio description worked for one series and not the other. I watched both The Connor’s (and Jeopardy Masters yesterday, and Masters had audio description, so that’s good, but good old reliable The Connors did not at least as of the time I watched it yesterday. If people who were in charge of making sure accessibility worked properly were also personally invested in the need for accessibility, perhaps they’d care a fragment more. Food for thought. If it’s just a job, then it’s just a job.

Say Something!
