It’s just one of those weird days where I reflect back on my list, and I didn’t expect this show to end up on top. Random assortments make things always more interesting.
1) We Own This City (HBO/HBO MAX)
English Audio Description Available?: Yes
This limited series came to a close, and while I ahven’t always been a fan to the point where this show has managed to top the list, or even get a top grade, it did so in its final hour, which wraps up all of its storylines in the most entertaining and meaningful fashion possible. This series is still a showcase for jon Bernthal, and I do prefer other classic shows like The Wire in the long run, but I do have to give credit where it’s due, and the final hour knocked it out of the park. Finally.
Episode Grade: A, Series Grade: B+
2) The Pentavorate (Netflix)
English Audio Description Available?: Yes
I miss and appreciate the humor of Mike Myers. I have to say, the Shrek cameo did put this episode over the top. Otherwise, I’m not really sure what this episode achieved, other than to just advance the plot. But in terms of laughs, strangely there were less here. I’m still not always sure how many characters mike Myers is actually playing in any given episode.
Episode Grade: B+
3) All Rise (OWN)
English Audio Description Available?: No
The last show of my day, and I was exhausted. Did i fall asleep for part of the episode? Sure did. But, there was enough happening during the parts where I was awake to be able to make this call. Audio Fucking Description, folks. I almost dropped this down even more, to prove my point. But that opening scene, where the guy is getting his verdict read? I’m *STILL* not sure what the fuck happened. Make,. Every. Show. Accessible.. To. The. Visually. Impaired.
Episode Grade: B
4) Under The Banner Of heaven (Hulu)
English Audio Description Available?: No
And in that same vein, this show has been exhausting trying to follow without audio description. I do find it interesting, in the way that I feel like I’m learning something about Mormon culture, but it’s hard to follow without audio description. I have no doubt, had this show been given AD, it would have topped every single list.
Episode Grade: B
5) Queer As Folk (Peacock)
English Audio Description Available?: Yes
Oof. I don’t know what to think about this episode. This was Episode 8? There were some interesting moments here between Ming and Brody, but bringing us all back around to the shooting, and Ming’s interpretive dance, with flashbacks, I had hoped this series was moving away from the decision to mimic the real life Pulse tragedy. But here, for the catharsis of the audience, those from the community who were involved in this fictional mass shooting got some final performance and then tore down the venue, when the reality of the Pulse nightclub shooting was much more horrific, and the venue was demolished because it was no longer salvageable. It is now a memorial. Then, couple that in with what could have been a solid closer with Ming revealing his HIV status to his mother, only for her to laugh it off. I know she’s like the most progressive mother in history, but that’s a real moment that too many people have to go through, and instead of giving your audience their wish upon a star fairy godmother fantasy, having a character that seems to never be grounded in reality actually react to the moment happening around her in a way that was understanding and compassionate, while still not being judge mental would have served the series better. At this point, I really just don’t want a second season. They would have to gut the writers room. Or, reboot the entire cast and move to a new city. Something. This series is broken, and I’m not sure it can be repaired.
Episode Grade: C-
6) Pacific Rim: The Black (Netflix)
English Audio description Available?: Yes
For a show that has absolutely had its moments, I was jsut oddly glad we finally closed the book. This second season went on too long, frequently not knowing what it needed to do, and trying to come up with 7 half hour episodes. As a film, if this were to be thrown together, it would be like watching an over 3 hour Pacific Rim film. And since this is the end, it’s probably best it stays that way.
