The Too Much TV Roundup- October 15th

Seven shows to count down today. No heavy hitters to block the top spot. So who will it go to?

7) The Rookie: Feds (ABC/Hulu)

English Audio Description?: Yes

I’m a big fan of the original flagship show, so it will take a lot for me to stop watching this, but it just doesn’t have the same flavor. Sometimes, there really is magic in casting a perfect ensemble that balances itself out, and telling the stories with the whole group. Niecy Nash is hilarious, but sometimes she takes up the whole room, which is something Nathan Fillion doesn’t do on The Rookie. He manages to be both the series lead, but a complimentary cog in the ensemble wheel, often letting his lesser known co-stars shine. That isn’t happening here.

Episode Grade: B-

6) Fire Country (CBS/ Paramount Plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

While Claudia Dunn returned for a second week, I’m certain audio description will start becoming sporadic as it is for other CBS shows. This episode answered my questions as to what direction it wants to take, and seems to think it can balance both expanding the richness of it’s ensemble, but also having a weekly fire to fight, despite choosing to be a small town doctor. If Andy had fought a major medical crisis every single week in Everwood, the show would not have endeared itself to fans so many years ago. Small town dramas don’t work the same way those Los Angeles/Chicago/New York shows do where the precincts can be overworked, and in constant crisis. Fire Country is going to need to have some episodes without fires, or it will get monotonous.

Episode Grade: B

5) The Old Man (FX/hulu)

English Audio Description?: Yes

In the penultimate Season 1 episode, we find that Harper might have just been played, and when that washes over him, his panic is the most compelling part about this episode. Hopefully the season finale hits with a bang, because I don’t think I’m getting my dream of having Jeff Bridges and john Lithgow face off.

Episode Grade: B+

4) So Help Me Todd (CBS/ Paount Plus)

English Audio Description?: No

This is what I’m talking about. The haphazard nature that CBS offers its programs with audio description. It’s not actually designed to support blind viewers, but rather benefit CBS in a way where it seems like they are doing this great deed. inconsistent narration is not helpful. I don’t know what the thought process is, that blind people are OK with following a show for an episode, then being confused by the next. In a show like So Help Me Todd, which is an investigative comedy, I miss out on visual clues. I want to like this show, and I would think CBS would want to build more of an audience for a Freshman drama, but I guess not.

Episode Grade: B+

3) Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous (Netflix)

English Audio Description?: Yes

I saw the rant some crazy lady posted to social media about how this show ruined her child when Yaz turned out to have feelings for Sammee. Their poor child has an insane mom that shut down this show, and had to explain (rather unnecessarily) stuff that homophobic parents say to their kids. Yaz starts off coming very slowly out of the closet, by talking to Ben about her feelings for Sammee and not knowing what to do about them. She admits she’s never had a crush on a girl before, and has no idea even how Sammee would react. At the end of the episode, it’s clear Yaz has feelings she’s not sure what to do with, but this show fell very short of having two kids run off into Jurassic park and have lesbian sex. Calm down. That being said, this episode was mostly just an episode about building a watering hole, and while I love this show to death, and they tried to make that as interesting as possible, it was still just a watering hole that happened way too fast and easy.

Episode Grade: A-

2) The mighty Ducks: Game Changers (Disney Plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

This week, we learned a bit more about Jace’s background, and why he hates his dad. Then, this Coaches Vs kids game happens, which seems like pure insanity, since the adults are bigger and stronger, but it turns into a farce as josh Duhmael’s coach tries to keep setting his unwilling son to score. There’s a huge rift here, one that only likely the Ducks can fix.

Episode Grade: A-

1) The Patient (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: Yes

It’s been a long road, but by Episode 6, this Steve Carell show makes its first appearance on top. With nothing in its way, and a very compelling hour which had heavy symbolism involving nazis, concentration camps, and a very broken doctor hallucinating a therapy session with his own psychologist, it’s certain that Steve Carell delivers one hell of a performance in this show. A very tense drama, and I honestly don’t know how it will end.

Episode Grade: A
