Only four shows today, but they were all hour shows, and I watched three movies. So, there you go.
4) The Devil’s Hour (Amazon)
English Audio Description?: Yes
This UK import is a slow burn, like a scary movie with no jump scares. It’s building to something, and that something could be absolutely nuts. I just don’t know. But after sitting through Netflix’s Devil In Ohio, I’m also convinced there might be nothing behind the curtain at all. This has one more episode to convince me it’s worth my limited time. Just whispering cool things like 3:33 being The Devil’s hour isn’t enough to make me watch an entire series.
Episode Grade: C+
3) The White Lotus (HBO/ HBo MAX)
English Audio Description?: Yes
I think it’s time for me to spill the beans that I didn’t actually love the first season of The White Lotus. yes, Jennifer Coolidge was amazing, but it got far too many Emmy nominations. This seasons cast has me intrigued, but I’m already running into a bit of the same problem as before, trying to remember who everyone is in this short window of time in the season opener before stuff really starts to get weird. Maybe this is a show I just flat out miss facial recognition with. But, it’s never been at the top of my list.
Episode Grade: B
2) The Mysterious Benedict Society (Disney Plus)
English Audio Description?: Yes
There’s something about the set up for the second season that makes me believe there wasn’t much thought put into the possibility of one after the first season. I like seeing how the characters have grown and changed, but if you put this season premiere against the pilot episode, the two aren’t even remotely the same.
Episode Grade: B+
1) From Scratch (Netflix)
English Audio Description?: Yes
I felt like I just watched an entire movie in one episode. So much happens in the first episode, I kept checking the runtime to make sure i wasn’t actually watching a movie or something. Zoe Saldana is great in this, and the cast around her is delightful. I don’t know what to expect considering all the ground covered in less than one hour, but I look forward to a second episode.
Episode Grade: A
My wife and I were enjoying the first “season” of White Lotus until its finale, which left us disappointed enough we decided to skip any future editions. For how little actually occurred in that series – the very definition of a slow burn – the ending really fizzled out for us.
