The Too Much TV Roundup- December 30th

Yesterday, as we get closer to rounding out the new year, I managed 6 shows, Chelsea Handler’s new Netflix comedy special, and two films. I didn’t rank Chelsea Handler’s stand up, as i think that is really truly subjective, and different people have different favorite stand up comics.

6) Mammals (Amazon)

English Audio Description?: Yes

I wish i could tell you what I just watched, what the show was about, what it’s long term goals were, what genre it was shooting for, or something. I felt like I was at a total loss. Sometimes, the show seems to just be heading in a normal direction, but then shoots off in an absurdist manner to something else, and it’s not really clear about the intention. I tend to assume any show that spends a few moments discussing a gigantic penis to be aimed at the comedy crowd, but I also never laughed. If James Corden is leaving his late show to do more of this… we might never hear from him again.

Final grade: D-

5) The Mysterious Benedict Society (Disney plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

I think the gang is finally starting to realize they are all over the place. Constance being able to put herself to sleep instantaneously felt on brand, but I also had questions about how someone could carry fuel in their boots. Like, with no leakage? Wow. And wouldn’t your shoes be flammable afterwards? Just a thought.

Episode Grade: B

4) Rami (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: Yes

I was today years old when I learned that this was an A24 production. Finally, a Rami episode. Like, this felt like a season two Rami episode, and for good reason. As we saw at the end, Rami has a big surprise waiting for him. Well, two surprises. That was a very unexpected ending to the 8th episode of the season.

Final Grade: B

3) Tulsa King (Paramount Plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

This show still has the worst audio description. But, I’m still loving Stallone. This episode just lost out a bit to the others because it was less consequential. Although, Dwight did have a really emotionally resonant conversation over FaceTime with his dying brother.

Final Grade: A

2) Mythic Quest (Apple Plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

After going dramatic last week, this show still kept a bit of that element in there as GrimPop was reaching a breaking point. On the other floor, David was freaking out about a rat, which led to some hilarious talk about a rat of a different meaning, when David was just afraid of a literal rat. It was funny and also had a bit of a shoe drop at the end.

Episode Grade: A

1) The midnight Club (Netflix)

English Audio Description?: Yes

I didn’t know what to think at first. The episode had such a unique beginning, I bought into it. Then it revealed itself, and I saw what it really was, and I appreciated it even more. A very impactful episode, that allowed the whole cast to shine in one way or another, as they all still confront their own mortality. And it ends on a very spooky note.

Episode Grade: A
