The Small Screen Diaries- 05/24/23

Starting off today with some cancellations. MAX cancelled, and I totally understand, The Girls On the Bus. We’re on the same page. That’s rare. Originally, I saw it billed as a limited series, but I guess they changed gears. Also, Apple Plus cancelled Still up, which is more disappointing, but not worth rioting over. That show was going to have a problem going the distance anyway once the initial quirky catalyst was thrown out the window.

It’s still finale season, and I wrapped the season finale of Fallout (Amazon), which I am saddened doesn’t actually credit an audio description narrator at the end. Just “Media Access Group”. I don’t think they’ve ever reached out to me before on anything, so I’m not on their radar, but you guys produce some tremendous work, and often the narrator is never credited, or a writer. To be honest, in the most recent Audio Description project awards for film and television excellence, my nomination for TV was a show that the Media Access Group did the description. I don’t know who wrote or narrated, but I just voted for it. Please fight for these credits, because you are doing work on streamers that credit talent on other projects done by other companies. This finale to fallout was terrific, and really mixed the backstory of lore in finally front and center, as we discovered a lot more truth about the vaults. There’s a tease that Seaosn 2 is going to be New Vegas. Also, finally a shoutout to Nuka Cola. I feel like I was waiting all season to actually hear the brand name. I love this series, and I’m fairly confident it will land an Emmy nomination for drama series.

I also finished Abbott Elementary (Hulu), which leaned in heavy on the will they/won’t they that has driven three seasons. I guess they will. I’m not even sure this had a coherent structure or plot, it was just the cast cutting loose. I love Sheryl, but I’m really rooting for Janelle James to finally win an Emmy for playing Ava. I’m excited for more Abbott this fall, and we’ll have to see what the audio description is like, cause this season was messy at the start.

I finished palm Royale (Apple Plus) which feels like it should be a limited, though it has been very careful to not label itself as such (like Sugar). If this cast all actually comes back, I’d be shocked. that was kind of a burn it to the ground finale. carol Burnett was excellent, and if there are any Emmy nominations, it will probably be Kristen Wiig and Allison Janney. Burnett is a maybe. She often had so little to do. Her involvement is what really had me interested. This series was Ok, but there are funnier shows on the market.

I’m a little closer to the season finale of Dead Boy Detectives (Netflix) as Crystal seemed to get rid of her demon, lose her powers, and find even stronger ones. is the witch gone? Did the Night Nurse just steal a Dead Boy? I’m hoping Netflix goes for a second season here, because this show is turning out to be pretty great.

Under The Bridge (Hulu) had Anoop Desai’s “Emmy moment”, should he manage a supporting actor nomination. that scene between him and Reina, after she lied about him molesting her, and he won’t open the door for her to get her clothes, was clearly rough. I felt the dad that wanted to help his troubled daughter, but at the same time, some things can’t be taken back, and he does such a good job conveying a lot of emotions. American Idol alumni representing. Also, run dusty run.

The Big Cigar (Apple Plus) continued the story of Huey, and the story of the FBi going after him, while these movie producers are trying to get him to Cuba. I don’t see this being a big Emmy player. Andre Holland just always flies under the radar, and his competition for Best Actor in a Limited Series is the most insane category. Thank God Shogun got a renewal so it can’t be considered limited anymore.

And lastly, I watched an episode of Tiny Toons Looniversity (MAX) that dealt with secret societies. hah.

Say Something!
